In modern households, many electronic devices use Wi-Fi. If the bandwidth is not sufficient, the speed can be slow and frustrating, especially when working from home. You can think of the Wi-Fi in your home as a highway, with electronic devices being like cars driving on it. The fewer cars on the highway, the faster the speed.
The Northumberland County Council in the UK has shared tips on how to improve home Wi-Fi speed with the public. In a previous blog post, the council explained that thinking of Wi-Fi connections as highways, especially in larger households, can be helpful. When the speed is slow, reducing the number of devices used simultaneously may help.
The article points out that if the number of lanes (bandwidth) remains the same, the more vehicles (data transmission) traveling at the same time, the more likely it is to encounter traffic congestion (slower internet speed). Also, checking if devices are automatically downloading updates can help alleviate the issue.
The article states, “If you are certain that no one else in your home is using all the bandwidth, then the issue may be with your computer (or another device not in use).”
People are advised to check smart TVs, gaming consoles, and computers as these devices may be downloading software, programs, or game updates, thus consuming bandwidth.
Sky UK also shares tips on how to speed up Wi-Fi on their website. The company says, “Wi-Fi connects your devices to the network hub, and each household situation is different, meaning that Wi-Fi settings can vary.”
There are various reasons why Wi-Fi speed decreases or signals weaken in certain rooms, with distance being the most common cause. The farther you are from the network hub, the weaker the signal.
The layout of your home also matters. Thick walls, floors, large furniture, older devices, or many people online at the same time can all affect signal strength.
The company suggests moving the network hub to a better location, away from sources of interference like microwaves, cordless phones, or baby monitors.
For stationary devices like TVs, gaming consoles, or desktop computers, using wired connections can free up Wi-Fi bandwidth for other devices in the home.
Experts have revealed that any device using Bluetooth technology, such as Bluetooth speakers, significantly impacts Wi-Fi performance. Therefore, it’s recommended to keep these devices away from Wi-Fi routers to prevent a decrease in speed.
By making these adjustments and optimizing your home Wi-Fi setup, you can enjoy faster and more reliable internet connection for all your needs.
