On the eve of the Chinese Communist Party’s “July 1st” founding day, the China Democracy Party National Committee held a rally on the evening of June 27 at Times Square in New York. On one hand, they protested against the Law on the Promotion of National Unity and Progress, which the Chinese Communist Party is set to officially implement on July 1, claiming that this law aims to extend the CCP’s political oppression overseas. On the other hand, they denounced the various persecutions inflicted on the Chinese people by the CCP since its founding, and once again called on the Chinese people to break free from CCP control.
Dozens of members of the China Democracy Party raised banners in both Chinese and English stating “Chinese people oppose Taiwan invasion” and “Evil laws shall not take effect.” They shouted slogans like “Down with the Chinese Communist Party” and “CCP step down” at Times Square, known as the “Crossroads of the World,” attracting tourists from around the globe to stop and watch.
Participants at the rally pointed out that the Law on the Promotion of National Unity and Progress, set to be implemented on July 1, expands the CCP’s political control over overseas territories under the guise of “national unity.” Banners at the scene indicated that this law has extraterritorial effect, which Beijing could potentially use to prosecute foreigners and overseas Chinese who support Taiwan under charges of “separatism” or other offenses.
Gong Kai, a member of the China Democracy Party, stated that this is a “malicious law seeking to legalize transnational repression,” where anyone openly supporting Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, or Tibet could be labeled as “splittists” by the CCP. He warned that even individuals who acquire foreign citizenship could still be threatened and intimidated by the CCP under this law.
Member Zhu Youjun expressed that according to the logic of this law, anyone overseas who supports democracy and freedom in Taiwan could unknowingly be deemed as breaking the law by the CCP.
In addition to protesting against the evil law, the China Democracy Party also used the eve of July 1st to once again denounce the historical crimes committed by the CCP since its founding.
Wang Juntao, the chairman of the China Democracy Party, stated that the party has been continuously holding “Jasmine Movement” gatherings at Times Square in recent years, with rallies twice a week, openly chanting slogans like “Down with the Chinese Communist Party” and “CCP step down.” They hope that through ongoing public actions, they can awaken the conscience of more Chinese people and help overseas Chinese gradually overcome their fear of the CCP.
He said that many people initially hesitated to openly oppose the CCP, but after participating in group actions time and time again, their mindset gradually changed. “Action can change a person,” he said. Many party members have told him that they have never shouted slogans so loudly in their lives before; after chanting slogans at Times Square, their attitude towards the CCP changed, and they no longer fear the CCP, becoming more resolute in their anti-CCP beliefs.
Wang Juntao said that Times Square is a gathering place for tourists from around the world and a well-known public square. By openly opposing the CCP here, they are not only speaking out to the Chinese people but also letting people from various countries understand the Chinese people’s pursuit of democracy and freedom.
Jiang Jinmu, a member of the China Democracy Party, expressed that after joining the party and standing with like-minded individuals to openly oppose the CCP, he felt empowered and able to freely express the voices of the Chinese people against the CCP.
Another member, Li Yonghong, mentioned that after coming overseas and being exposed to different information, she gained a new understanding of China. “I didn’t have access to all this information before, and now I finally know what real China is like,” she said, allowing her to see more clearly the harm caused by the CCP system to the people.
