Samsung Calls Off Impending Massive Strike, Temporarily Resolving Global Chip Supply Chain Crisis

Global technology industry’s attention was closely focused on a major strike crisis facing Samsung Electronics, the South Korean tech giant, on Wednesday night (May 20th), witnessing a significant turning point when the government intervened. After government intervention, both labor and management parties reached a temporary agreement draft just one hour before the planned strike was set to begin.

According to reports from Yonhap News Agency and The Korea Times, Samsung Electronics’ labor union had originally planned to launch a full-scale strike on Thursday (May 21st). However, at the last minute, South Korea’s Minister of Employment and Labor, Kim Young-hoon, personally intervened and mediated the situation.

After nearly 7 hours of marathon negotiations, a suspenseful late-night agreement on temporary salary terms was reached, leading the union to announce a temporary suspension of the strike action, thereby temporarily averting a global crisis in the semiconductor supply chain.

The development of the Samsung workers’ major strike had been tumultuous. Due to core disputes around performance-related bonuses distribution and other issues between labor and management parties that couldn’t be bridged, negotiations were declared failed earlier on Wednesday, prompting the union to announce the impending full-scale strike on the 21st.

However, just about 4 hours after the strike announcement, Kim Young-hoon personally intervened, and both sides returned to the negotiating table at 4 p.m. that day, initiating a new round of intense discussions.

After lengthy wrangling, by nearly 11 p.m. on Wednesday, the Samsung Electronics’ labor union headquarters urgently issued the latest directive to all members, announcing a temporary postponement of the planned total strike action scheduled from May 21st to June 7th until further notice.

Next, Samsung union members will vote on the interim agreement reached regarding the 2026 salary. The union has issued a notice that all members must participate in the vote.

According to the schedule released by the union, the voting will officially commence at 2 p.m. local Korean time on the 22nd and continue until 10 a.m. on the 27th.

Whether this temporary agreement will ultimately be formalized depends entirely on the results of this member vote.

If it receives a majority approval, relations between Samsung management and labor will temporarily stabilize. If rejected, the specter of a major strike may loom again.

Samsung Electronics is one of the world’s largest memory chip suppliers, and its production dynamics play a crucial role in the overall tech industry.

During the escalating period of this major strike crisis, global markets were highly concerned. If the union’s full-scale strike becomes a reality, it could directly impact the production and shipment schedules of key chips such as DRAM, NAND Flash, and High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), subsequently increasing the overall procurement and deployment costs of AI server supply chains, causing a cascading effect on the global tech industry.

With the last-minute halt of the Samsung Electronics major strike just before it officially started, the tense nerves in the market and industry have temporarily relaxed.

However, it is widely believed that this tussle between Samsung Electronics labor and management has not yet reached a conclusion, and the ultimate outcome remains contingent upon the results of the member vote at the end of this month. Only then will it be confirmed whether this round of Samsung Electronics strike crisis has actually been resolved.
