Severe Waterlogging in Urban Area of Hefei, Anhui: Cars Submerged, Metro Stairs Turn into Waterfalls

Heavy rain caused severe flooding in parts of Hefei, Anhui Province on May 27, with some neighborhoods submerged and vehicles nearly submerged. Even the local subway witnessed a “staircase waterfall” due to the extreme weather.

Starting from the afternoon of May 26, Hefei, Anhui Province experienced heavy rainfall. Local residents reported that on May 27, several residential areas in Hefei suffered serious flooding.

Videos circulated online showed streets turning into rivers, with vehicles almost completely submerged in water. Some photos depicted floodwaters reaching chest height on adults.

An article on the NetEase account “Volcano Poet” on May 28 revealed that the average rainfall in Hefei reached 51 millimeters, with the most affected areas receiving up to 176 millimeters. On the 27th, several locations such as Nan Erhuan intersection with Hezuohua Road, Xierhuan intersection with Hehuan Road, and Changning Avenue with Caihong Road experienced severe flooding, with water levels rising above the knees.

The article mentioned that parking areas outside many residential communities were inundated, causing significant damage to vehicles. Meanwhile, on elevated bridges, a “sea-watching mode” was initiated.

Another netizen disclosed that on the morning of the 27th, a Mr. X planned to drive to Lujiang but was forced to turn back after learning that the Huanchaohu Avenue was flooded and the entrance to Fangxing Avenue was blocked. The netizen also shared that his child’s nursery received an emergency notice to delay drop-offs due to the flooding. Pictures circulated on social media depicted the inundation of elevated bridges, making it challenging to drive within the city, and even training schools were affected by flooding.

Furthermore, a netizen shared images showing a “staircase waterfall” at Line 4 of the Hefei subway. The subway station was flooded, with water flowing rapidly inside, turning the staircases into a “waterfall.” Netizens joked: “First time seeing a waterfall inside a subway!” “Is it due to the extreme rainfall? Or is there a problem somewhere? It’s truly puzzling!!!” Some even quipped, “Is this a subway station or a water park?”
