New York authorities revealed that a man with multiple prior offenses engaged in a series of assaults against multiple women at a Brooklyn subway station on Saturday, February 14th. Not only did he push a woman onto the tracks and assault a passenger, but he also brutally attacked a 17-year-old girl as he fled the scene. The suspect appeared in court on Sunday and was denied bail by the judge.
According to prosecutors, 25-year-old Curtis Signal approached three women at the R-line subway station at 53rd Street and Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn on Saturday morning. He verbally abused one of the women, telling her to “shut up,” before suddenly becoming physically violent.
Assistant District Attorney Tziyonah Langsam stated in Brooklyn Criminal Court that Signal pushed a 51-year-old woman onto the tracks, causing her severe injuries and significant bleeding. He then punched a 44-year-old woman, leaving her with bruises and swelling.
As Signal fled the subway station, he yelled loudly and intimidated a 17-year-old girl who tried to avoid him. He questioned the girl, asking if she was a gang member, and then proceeded to violently strike her in the face, mocking her as if she thought she was part of a gang.
The teenage girl later positively identified Signal as the attacker from photos provided by a nearby business, while two other adult victims confirmed his identity through surveillance footage. Police eventually arrested Signal at a shelter and brought him into custody.
Prosecutors have brought multiple serious charges against Signal, including attempted second-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, and unlawful possession of a weapon. They emphasized that Signal is a “repeat offender of subway violence” who is currently on probation until June 2027.
Prosecutors also disclosed that Signal has a history of assault charges over the past few years and showed no remorse for his actions. The judge deemed Signal to be a flight risk and therefore denied bail. Signal is expected to appear in court again on February 19th.
