On April 10th, the official announcement from the Chinese Communist Party stated that Wu Zheng, the former party committee member and deputy director of the Nanjing Library, is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law and is currently under investigation.
Public records show that Wu Zheng, male, born in July 1963 in Rugao, Jiangsu Province, holds a master’s degree and is a member of the Chinese Communist Party.
Wu Zheng has previously held positions such as Director of the Technical Department at the Nanjing Library, Deputy Director of the Nanjing Library since April 2019, and stepped down from this position and retired in August 2023.
Moreover, Wu Zheng has served as the Director of the Library Big Data Application of the Key Laboratory of Culture and Tourism in Jiangsu Province, Chairman of the Library Minors’ Service Committee of the Library Society of Jiangsu Province, External Master’s Supervisor at Nanjing University, a member of the Academic Committee of the Big Data Application of Public Cultural Services in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a member of the Standardization Technical Committee of Culture and Tourism in Jiangsu Province, and an editorial board member of the “New Century Library” journal.
The Nanjing Library is a provincial-level public library in Jiangsu Province and a national first-class library, ranking as the third largest library in China with an administrative level of vice-hall. Its predecessor can be traced back to the Jiangnan Library founded in 1907 by Duan Fang, the Governor-General of the two Jiang provinces, located at the former site of the Longpan Li Xiyin Academy in Nanjing, with Miao Qunsun as the general office. After the Xinhai Revolution, the library changed its name several times. The Nanjing Library is one of the first units in the country designated for the protection of ancient books and the first national-level center for the restoration of ancient books.
