In southern India’s Sivaganga district, a tragic accident occurred on Sunday (November 30th) involving two buses colliding, resulting in at least 11 deaths and 60 injuries.
Sivaganga is located in the Tamil Nadu state. The buses involved in the collision belong to the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC). At the time of the accident, one bus was traveling from Karaikudi to Devakottai, while the other was heading from Devakottai to Dindigul. The collision took place near Vivekananda Polytechnic College.
According to reports from New Delhi Television (NDTV), authorities indicated that the incident led to at least 11 deaths and 60 injuries, including a child among the casualties, as stated by the Tamil Nadu state police chief.
As reported by the Indian media outlet “The Hindu,” officials mentioned that one of the bus drivers, 36-year-old P. Sendrayan, died on the spot.
The injured passengers were taken to hospitals including Karaikudi Government Hospital, Thirupathur Government Hospital, and Sivaganga Government Hospital. Six of the injured were later transferred to Government Rajaji Hospital.
Among the 11 fatalities, there were 9 females and 2 males. Authorities have identified some of the deceased individuals.
Local residents alerted emergency services following the accident and commenced rescuing those trapped in the wreckage.
Officials stated that they are still awaiting the results of the investigation into the cause of the accident and the conditions of more injured passengers.
This is the second major bus collision incident in southern Tamil Nadu in recent days.
Last week, in the Tenkasi area of the state, two private buses collided, resulting in 6 fatalities. Investigators at the time suggested that reckless driving by one of the bus drivers might have been a contributing factor to the accident.
