The U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Iran is expected to respond on Friday, May 8th, to the U.S.-proposed plan to end the war. He expressed hope that this response would lead to the initiation of serious negotiation processes between the two sides. However, the Secretary also reiterated the United States’ red line, emphasizing that any threats against American citizens would result in retaliation.
The Trump administration had previously presented a proposal to Iran aimed at ending the conflict a few days ago. Iran had responded at that time by stating that they were examining the U.S. proposal. Rubio mentioned during a press conference in Rome on Friday morning regarding the Iranian issue, “We should learn some news today.”
“As of the past hour, we have not received a reply,” he said. “Their (Iran’s) system remains highly divided and dysfunctional, which could be a hindrance.”
The Secretary of State pointed out that he hoped Iran’s response “would prompt us to enter into serious negotiation processes.”
On Thursday, May 7th, as three U.S. destroyers crossed the Strait of Hormuz, they were targeted by Iranian missiles, drones, and fast boats. Following a defensive response by the U.S. military, retaliatory airstrikes were conducted on Iranian missile and drone launch sites, among other military facilities.
Rubio stated on Friday that the military actions taken by the U.S. against Iran the day before were separate and distinct from the “Operation Epic Wrath,” indicating that the U.S. would continue to respond defensively.
“Only a foolish country would not strike back when attacked. We are not a foolish country,” the top U.S. diplomat declared at the press conference.
When asked if the U.S. had set any red lines for Iran, Rubio responded, “The red line is clear: if they threaten American citizens, they will be bombed.”
He also warned Iran’s fast boat forces not to approach U.S. Navy ships, asserting that, “If they come near our ships, we will bomb them.”
Rubio further mentioned reports on Thursday night that “Iran has established or attempted to establish some mechanism to control traffic in the Strait of Hormuz,” describing it as a very serious issue that is actually unacceptable.
He stated that the international community cannot accept Iran’s claims of “controlling the Strait of Hormuz” and cautioned that it would set a dangerous global precedent.
“Iran is now claiming the right to control an international waterway. The world must decide if it is ready to allow this situation to normalize,” he said, adding, “If the answer is no, and we do not want this situation to normalize, then you better support actions that are more forceful than strong statements.”
He mentioned that the U.S. is seeking a diplomatic solution and is committed to pushing for a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at preventing Iran from controlling the strait or laying mines there.
