Representative Daniel Goldman, who represents Brooklyn and Chinatown, attended the Lunar New Year celebration hosted by the Brooklyn Chinese Association on the 25th of February. He spent the festive occasion with elderly members of the Chinese community, reiterating his commitment to advocating for the community and protecting the rights of vulnerable groups.
In his speech, Goldman first apologized for being late, explaining that he had just flown back to New York from Washington, D.C. He revealed that earlier in the day, he had formally introduced a bill to upgrade the current food stamp program (SNAP – Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to a chip-enabled card to replace the more vulnerable magnetic stripe cards susceptible to skimming and fraudulent activities, emphasizing the importance of enhancing security to prevent welfare fund theft.
Goldman stated, “The new chip card is much more secure than the current magnetic stripe card, effectively preventing theft.” He also stated that he is working diligently to restore federal compensation funds for victims of SNAP theft, which had been previously reduced. “My job is to respond to the needs of the community.”
In conclusion, Goldman greeted the elderly present in Chinese to wish them a happy New Year, going table to table to exchange greetings and offer Lunar New Year blessings. Additionally, he expressed his gratitude to the Brooklyn Chinese Association for providing quality services to elderly Chinese community members for decades, acknowledging their longstanding dedication to the community and caring for the well-being of the elderly.
