The Lynwood Library reopened on Friday (September 4) after undergoing an $8 million renovation project. Located in Los Angeles County, this nearly 50-year-old facility has been modernized with new technological equipment and an expanded community space.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn and Dr. Skye Patrick, the County Librarian, joined members of the community for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the renovation of this 12,000-square-foot library.
Situated at 11320 Bullis Road, adjacent to the Lynwood City Hall and Lynwood Park, the library was built in 1977 and had not undergone significant upgrades since its opening.
Hahn stated, “The Lynwood Library was long overdue for an upgrade. This community holds a special affection for their library, and they have patiently waited during the two-year renovation period, and now the day has finally come to welcome everyone back. I am proud that we could provide the most advanced library for the families of Lynwood.”
Officials mentioned that the renovated library now features separate sections for adults, teenagers, and children, expanded community activity rooms, two group study rooms, and a new customer service desk. Additionally, it has added quick self-service borrowing and returning equipment, public computers, and Wi-Fi. Two large skylights have been installed inside to allow more natural light into the building, while the exterior landscaping features drought-resistant designs.
This renovation project is part of the Southeast Los Angeles County Library Upgrade Program. When the project was announced, the Lynwood Library was the first of five libraries scheduled for renovation and received support from Hahn’s office. The other four libraries awaiting renovation are the Huntington Park Library, Bell Library, the Leland R. Weaver Library in South Gate, and the Maywood César Chávez Library.
According to the county government, the Los Angeles County Library currently operates 86 libraries and a fleet of 15 mobile library vehicles, serving an area of 3,000 square miles and benefiting 3.4 million residents.
