According to reports, Ren Yuzhong, the Vice President of Peking University from the “80s generation”, has been dismissed from his position, with no clear information on his next steps and the reasons behind it. Ren Yuzhong took on the role of Vice President of Peking University, as well as Secretary-General, Minister of the Party Committee’s Propaganda Department, Spokesperson, Director of the Integrated Media Center, and Party Committee Secretary of the Department of Sociology in March of last year.
As reported by Hong Kong media, “Sing Tao Daily” on August 21st, last spring, Ren Yuzhong became a sensation as the “80s post” Vice President of Peking University. At the end of last month, there were rumors about Ren Yuzhong circulating on the mainland Chinese internet, but Peking University did not issue any clarification. Known for the saying “No trivial matters at Peking University”, the institution not only stands as the highest educational establishment in mainland China but has also played a significant role in social change, where any minor incident could potentially stir up a huge controversy.
Recent online rumors surrounding the alleged “buying and selling of doctoral positions” by Professor Yi Jiming of Peking University’s Law School were promptly refuted by the university. In contrast, there has been no clarification from Peking University regarding the rumors concerning Ren Yuzhong, sparking public attention.
Reports indicated that Peking University’s official website has already removed Ren Yuzhong’s information from the “Current Leadership” section, implying that he has been dismissed with unclear future prospects.
Ren Yuzhong was considered a “red and professional” cadre, having previously served as the Director of the Party School Office and School Office at Peking University, Minister of the Personnel Department, and Minister of the Party Committee Teacher Affairs Department. In August 2020, he was appointed as the Minister of the Party Committee’s Propaganda Department, Director of the Integrated Media Center, and Spokesperson.
Ren Yuzhong frequently contributed articles to the “Study Times” under the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China. In June of this year, he even published an article titled “A Good School Depends on Great Masters, Not Just on Great Buildings”.
According to previous reports by Chinese media, Ren Yuzhong was born in January 1980. He enrolled in the International Relations College of Peking University in 1998, majoring in International Politics. In 2002, he was recognized as an outstanding graduate by the Beijing Municipal Government and was directly enrolled in the graduate program. After graduation, he remained at the university to work and obtained a doctoral degree in law.
On March 26th last year, the official website of Peking University updated the “Current Leadership” section, indicating that Ren Yuzhong had been appointed as the Vice President of Peking University. The information showed that Ren Yuzhong concurrently held five positions, including Secretary-General, Minister of the Party Committee’s Propaganda Department, Spokesperson, Director of the Integrated Media Center, and Party Committee Secretary of the Department of Sociology.
After taking office, Ren Yuzhong was responsible for supervising inspection, letters and visits, network security and informatization, library, archives, school history, and publishing work. He assisted the Party Committee Secretary and the President in their daily governmental work and managed propaganda work. He was in charge of the Party Committee Office, President’s Office, Inspection Office (Letters and Visits Office), Policy and Legal Research Office (Party Committee Policy Research Office), Network Security and Informatization Committee Office, Library, Archives, School History Museum, Publishing House, and more.
