Inner Mongolia Baogang Steel Plate Factory explosion case, death toll rises to 10

On January 18, a tragic explosion occurred at the Baogang Plate Factory in Inner Mongolia, China. According to authorities, the death toll has risen to 10 as of January 21.

The Baogang Plate Factory Emergency Rescue Command announced on January 21 that they have located 8 missing individuals, all of whom showed no signs of life. This incident has resulted in the loss of 10 lives and injuries to 84 people.

At 3:03 pm on January 18, an explosion took place at a 650-cubic-meter saturated water and steam ball tank in the steel refining department of the Baogang Plate Factory. Videos circulating online captured the moment of the explosion, with a white mushroom cloud shooting up into the sky.

As reported by Phoenix News “Storm Eye,” the explosion was of massive magnitude. The enormous steam ball tank within the factory disintegrated during the blast, with some parts of the tank propelled over 2 kilometers by the impact force, eventually crashing down in a scrap metal recycling yard, causing a two-story building to collapse. Fortunately, there were no casualties in this particular incident.

The Baogang Group and Baogang Corporation have previously experienced safety incidents. According to official data, over the past 10 years from 2016 until now, safety incidents at Baogang Corporation have resulted in the deaths of at least 37 individuals.
