Last year, it has been over a month since the fire broke out at the Hong Kong Grandview Garden in Tai Po, where the death toll has risen from 161 to 168 as of January 15.
On the night of January 15, Hong Kong Secretary for Security, John Lee, told the media that the identification and forensic work on the bodies of the Grandview Garden fire victims had been completed, confirming a total of 168 deaths, with families already notified for identification. The deceased included one firefighter, two renovation workers, five construction workers, and ten domestic helpers.
According to John Lee, the figure of 168 deceased is final, and no further updates will be made. All inquiries regarding the victims of the Grandview Garden fire at the casualty inquiry center have also been verified.
On November 26 of last year, a five-alarm fire broke out at the Grandview Garden in Tai Po, affecting a total of 8 buildings, with 7 of them being engulfed in flames. Apart from the 168 fatalities, 79 people were injured, making it the third deadliest fire in Hong Kong history. It is also considered the deadliest fire in terms of casualties since the handover of sovereignty, with some media outlets labeling it as “Hong Kong’s tragedy”.
