The US Central Command announced on Thursday (April 23) that the aircraft carrier “USS George H.W. Bush” (CVN-77) has now commenced its mission in the Middle East after bypassing the southern tip of Africa. This marks the first time since the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that three aircraft carriers of the US military are simultaneously operating in the Middle East region to exert maximum pressure on Iran.
Since January this year, the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) has been on a mission in the Arabian Sea, while the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) has been operating in the Red Sea since last week.
The Central Command wrote on its platform that on April 23, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush was sailing in the US Central Command’s area of responsibility in the Indian Ocean.
The Command also released a photo of meal service on board the Lincoln aircraft carrier, with a caption stating that sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln are distributing meals to the crew. A typical carrier strike group consumes approximately 4,000 eggs per day.
“There are currently three carrier strike groups operating in the Middle East region. The sailors and marines of these forces collectively consume over 12,000 eggs per day,” the Central Command stated.
Earlier on Thursday, the Central Command released photos of the daily operations aboard the Ford aircraft carrier. The Command stated that operations of day and night flights continue on the world’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford. The Ford carrier strike group remains on task in the Red Sea, supporting maritime security for the US Fifth Fleet.
The USS George H.W. Bush departed from Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia on March 31, carrying the Carrier Air Wing Seven and sailing south of the equator, passing Cape Agulhas, then proceeding north through the Mozambique Channel into the Indian Ocean.
The Bush aircraft carrier was accompanied by the USS Mason (DDG-87), USS Donald Cook (DDG-75), and USS Ross (DDG-71) destroyers, all carrying officers and sailors from Destroyer Squadron 22 based in Norfolk. The Bush carrier strike group also included one of the fleet’s remaining two high-speed replenishment oilers, the USNS Arctic (T-AOE-8). Both the Arctic and her sister ship, the USNS Supply (T-AOE-6), have the capability to keep pace with the carrier’s journey.
The Central Command is responsible for commanding military operations in the Middle East region. With President Trump seeking negotiations with Iran, the movements of the Bush aircraft carrier have been closely watched as a potential signal point.
The arrival of the third US aircraft carrier and escort vessels near Iran on Thursday significantly enhances the military strength available to President Trump. The USS George H.W. Bush will join the Ford and Lincoln aircraft carriers, further bolstering the number of carrier-based aircraft and warships of the US Navy, enhancing air defense and long-range strike capabilities.
President Trump is exerting pressure on the Iranian regime to abandon its nuclear program and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The President stated on Thursday that time is not on Iran’s side and that an agreement with Iran will only be reached when it benefits the United States, its allies, and other countries worldwide.
The Central Command has reiterated that the US military remains prepared for combat and can engage in action against Iran at any time.
Former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman stated on the platform X on Thursday that Iran underestimates President Trump’s resolve to defeat Iran. He warned that expecting Trump to “back down” would be a “historical” mistake.
US Senator Lindsey Graham praised President Trump’s leadership on Thursday, stating that under Trump’s leadership, Iran is no longer the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world. He commended Trump’s “determination” and leadership.
“They (Iran) don’t have a pathway to a nuclear weapon, they are no longer the largest state sponsor of terrorism, and they can’t use missiles to intimidate the region and the world as they once did. This is a remarkable achievement, and President Trump is right. But let’s not rush, let’s get it right,” Graham told Fox News.
Another US Senator, Tom Cotton, stated on Thursday that if Iran attempts to delay negotiations, they will face military consequences.
“They can’t have long-range offensive strike weapons, nor can they support terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas. These have been Iran’s clear objectives for over a decade. If Iran thinks they can gain the upper hand on the negotiating table by delaying, they will be disappointed, and that disappointment may come from the US military,” Cotton said in an interview with Fox News.
