Communist Party’s Black Hands Reach Africa, Southern California Overseas Chinese Community: Civilization Order Shall Not be Trampled

In a recent development concerning the official visit of the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to its African ally Swaziland, President Lai Ching-te faced pressure from the Chinese Communist authorities. This coercion led to the last-minute cancellation of flight permits for special flights to Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar, forcing a delay in the scheduled itinerary. In response to this situation, the overseas Chinese community in Southern California has demonstrated a high level of unity, with diplomats and community leaders speaking out to emphasize the importance of upholding national sovereignty and dignity, which is a consensus shared by the entire population. They also expressed their respect to overseas compatriots who have long been cultivating strong diplomatic support abroad.

On April 10, Ma Bo-yuan, the newly appointed Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, shared his views on the recent diplomatic setbacks while attending a welcome banquet hosted by the Orange County and San Diego Chinese community. He pointed out that the current international situation is constantly evolving, and some countries find it challenging to resist the economic and political pressures from Beijing, leading to the withdrawal of previously arranged plans. Ma emphasized that at certain moments, the Taiwanese government must respond cautiously to such circumstances.

He stressed that although there may be different perspectives on cross-strait relations domestically, once outside the country, there is a high degree of unity regarding the principles and bottom lines:

“The sovereignty and dignity of the Republic of China (Taiwan) must be upheld, and the basic rules of the international community and the order of civilization should also be respected. These are core values that everyone stands by.”

Ma underscored that diplomatic work is not just about appearances but is filled with long-term challenges and pressures. The key to Taiwan’s continuous advancement in various missions lies in the longstanding efforts of overseas compatriots within mainstream American society, establishing a positive image of “reliable Taiwan,” which serves as the strongest backing in diplomatic endeavors.

Former Presidential Advisor on National Policies to the Republic of China, Hsieh Chin-chih, offered a calm and pragmatic analysis of the recent events. He candidly acknowledged the long-standing structural pressures on Taiwan’s diplomatic space, stating, “We are facing a rogue enemy, lawless and unscrupulous, and can only do our best.” Hsieh believed that presidential visits are not merely technical flight arrangements but also sensitive matters that affect major power relations.

Hsieh also provided advice to the overseas Chinese community, expressing that while their advocacy and lobbying efforts have a long-term impact and may not bring immediate changes in specific flight permissions, they play an indispensable role in building international support. Overseas Taiwanese-Americans should strengthen their interactions with mainstream American society and political circles, cultivate a stable relationship, and foster pro-Taiwan forces. Rather than overly focusing on the gains or losses of individual events, it is essential to gradually advance and cultivate long-term visibility for Taiwan in a complex environment.

The recent turbulence surrounding the official visit once again highlights the challenges faced by Taiwan in the diplomatic arena. Ma Bo-yuan, on behalf of all diplomatic personnel, conveyed the highest respect to overseas compatriots who have been speaking out abroad, recognizing that the strength of the overseas compatriots is synonymous with the strength of the nation, and these individuals are crucial pillars in advancing Taiwan’s diplomatic efforts.
