Hybrid cars are now very popular, and if you are considering buying a hybrid SUV, there are many choices available on the market. Over the years, the Toyota RAV4 hybrid has been one of the top picks for shoppers. However, Toyota is now facing increasingly fierce competition, with the latest Hyundai Tucson hybrid being one of its competitors.
It is not surprising that the Toyota hybrid cars have become a consumer favorite, as the company has had a good reputation in hybrid systems since the introduction of the Toyota Prius. Moreover, the RAV4 hybrid also offers spacious seats, a large cargo area, and plenty of tech features. On the other hand, the Tucson is more stylish and modern, equipped with impressive technology.
Which one is better between the Toyota RAV4 hybrid and the Hyundai Tucson hybrid?
According to a report by the Associated Press, the US-based authoritative automotive trading website Edmunds conducted a comparison of these two compact hybrid SUVs.
The RAV4 hybrid comes with a four-cylinder engine and a hybrid system, with a total output power of 219 horsepower. When Edmunds tested the RAV4 Hybrid, it accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 7.8 seconds. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates the city/highway combined fuel consumption of this car to be 39 miles per gallon, while the rugged RAV4 Woodland Edition model has a combined fuel consumption of 37 miles per gallon, making it powerful yet fuel-efficient.
The Tucson hybrid adopts a more powerful hybrid system based on a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that can generate 231 horsepower. This car accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 7.7 seconds, slightly faster than the RAV4. In terms of fuel efficiency, the base model of the Tucson has a lower combined fuel consumption of 38 miles per gallon, while all other trim levels have a combined fuel consumption of 35 miles per gallon. In Edmunds’ hybrid driving test route, the Tucson hybrid had a fuel consumption of 34 miles per gallon, while the RAV4 hybrid had 35 miles per gallon.
Although the Tucson hybrid has more powerful performance and quicker speed, the hybrid cars focus more on fuel efficiency, hence the RAV4 hybrid wins in this aspect.
Winner: RAV4 Hybrid
Both hybrid SUVs come standard with advanced driver assistance features, including emergency automatic braking and lane-keeping assist. The practical 360-degree camera system is standard in the Tucson, but optional in the top-tier models of the RAV4. The Tucson also offers more advanced highway driving assistance systems, making highway driving easier.
The Tucson has a technological advantage as most models are equipped with a large 12.3-inch driver display and central touchscreen. The RAV4 comes with an 8-inch central touchscreen, but offers a larger 10.5-inch option. The Toyota’s standard driver display is partly analog, partly digital, while the full digital 12.3-inch display is only available on higher trim levels. Wireless smartphone connectivity is a standard feature in both cars; however, the Tucson comes standard with a wireless smartphone charger, while Toyota offers it as an option.
Winner: Tucson Hybrid
Both hybrid SUVs offer comfortable and supportive seats, but the Tucson’s seats are more luxurious. Both hybrids provide a comfortable riding experience, but Hyundai holds an advantage in terms of a smoother driving experience. The Tucson also has a quieter hybrid system, while the RAV4 tends to emit a buzzing noise during acceleration.
In terms of passenger space, they are comparable, but the Tucson offers a few more inches of rear legroom and more infant seat space. Both hybrid SUVs provide the largest cargo space in their class, with the Tucson slightly larger at 38.7 cubic feet compared to RAV4’s 37.6 cubic feet.
Winner: Tucson Hybrid
The starting price for the RAV4 hybrid LE base model is $33,295, while the top-tier Limited model starts at $41,600. The Tucson hybrid base model starts at $34,815, and the top-tier Limited Edition starts at $42,645.
The higher price of the Tucson’s top-tier configuration is justified by its additional standard features such as heated front seats, a larger central touchscreen, and hands-free power liftgate. The top-tier trim is also superior, with the Tucson Limited Edition offering more features compared to the RAV4, including the previously mentioned 360-degree camera system, panoramic sunroof, and heated steering wheel.
Another reason the Tucson provides better value is that the RAV4 hybrid is somewhat outdated, having not been redesigned since 2019. In contrast, the Tucson hybrid was redesigned in 2022 and updated in 2025, making it look more modern both inside and out. The Hyundai models also have a more refined and upscale feel. Importantly, the Tucson offers a longer warranty period.
Winner: Tucson Hybrid
The Hyundai Tucson hybrid’s exceptional comfort, value for money, and advanced technology make it the winner of this comparison. Although the Tucson has slightly lower fuel efficiency, its more modern hybrid technology makes it a more worthwhile purchase.
However, with the upcoming redesigned Toyota RAV4 soon to be released, it is expected to bring significant improvements.
