In recent years, internal strife and purges within the Chinese Communist Party’s military have been escalating. A total of 46 senior military leaders who were removed from their positions as the 14th National People’s Congress representatives have been publicly disclosed, including 22 generals, 18 lieutenant generals, and 6 major generals.
On August 28, 2026, three generals, including Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Chinese Communist Party, and one lieutenant general, Zhong Shaojun, were removed from the National People’s Congress.
On the same day, the 24th meeting of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the Chinese Communist Party closed, and after the meeting, it was announced that Zhang Youxia was removed from the position of Vice Chairman of the National Central Military Commission and Liu Zhenli, member of the National Central Military Commission.
The announcement stated that 12 National People’s Congress representatives were removed, including military representatives: Zhang Youxia, former Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Chinese Communist Party; Liu Zhenli, former member of the Central Military Commission and Chief of the Joint Staff; Ju Qiansheng, former Commander of the Strategic Support Force; and Zhong Shaojun, former Political Commissar of the National Defense University and Director of the Office of the Military Commission.
Two months earlier, on June 26, 2026, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the Chinese Communist Party announced the termination of the qualifications of 14 officials as National People’s Congress representatives, including 3 generals (Xu Xueqiang, Li Fengbiao, Guo Puxiao), and 3 lieutenant generals (Wang Kangping, Zhang Minghua, Yin Hongxing).
At the beginning of 2023, 281 National People’s Congress representatives were elected from 26 election units of the Chinese Communist Party military and the People’s Armed Police Force. According to the latest update on the official website of the National People’s Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, there are currently 233 military representatives in the National People’s Congress.
Over the past three years, internal conflicts and purges within the Chinese Communist Party’s military have continued to escalate, resulting in the public removal of 46 senior party leaders as National People’s Congress representatives. Public information shows that two other individuals, Li Dong and Chen Yu, have retired and switched careers, being removed from the military representative team and transferred to local representative teams.
