Taiwanese meteorological experts have announced that a strong cold air mass from mainland China is moving southward today (9th), becoming increasingly cold and humid as the night progresses. In some low-lying areas, temperatures will drop to below 10 degrees Celsius. There is a high chance of snow in the mountains tonight through the 11th. By the 12th, the weather will clear up but it will be extremely cold at night. People are advised to dress warmly to protect their health.
Associate Professor Wu Derong from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University in Taiwan mentioned on a weather program that the latest European model simulation on the evening of the 8th shows the southward movement of the cold air mass from China. There will be brief showers in the northern and eastern regions. Temperatures will sharply decrease in northern Taiwan, becoming increasingly cold and humid as the night progresses. Some low-lying areas will see temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Central and southern regions will remain partly cloudy with gradually decreasing temperatures. Temperature ranges are expected to be 10-16 degrees Celsius in the north, 11-20 degrees Celsius in the central region, 13-23 degrees Celsius in the south, and 11-22 degrees Celsius in the east.
Wu Derong also stated that according to the latest European model, the period from the 10th to the 12th will see a strong cold air mass enveloping the region, with brief showers in the northern and eastern regions and partly cloudy skies in the central and southern regions. Daytime high temperatures in northern Taiwan on the 10th and 11th will only reach 14-15 degrees Celsius, staying persistently cold and humid throughout the day. The central and southern regions will also experience a drop in temperatures, with some low-lying areas reaching around 7 degrees Celsius.
On the 12th through the early morning of the 13th, the weather will continue to be cold and clear under the influence of the strong cold air mass from China. Daytime temperatures will slightly rise due to sunlight, but at night, the “radiative cooling” effect will lead to extremely low temperatures, possibly dropping to 5 degrees Celsius in some low-lying areas. From tonight until the 11th, there is a high chance of snowfall above 3,000 meters in high mountains such as Hehuan Mountain and Xueshan, with a probability also present above 2,000 meters in places like Taipingshan and Lalashan.
During the period from today to the early morning of the 13th, Taiwan will experience wet and cold conditions followed by dry and cold conditions due to the strong cold air mass from mainland China. The range of temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius and the extreme minimum temperatures in low-lying areas will vary daily. Those in agriculture, fishing, and animal husbandry should pay attention to any adjustments in the Low-Temperature Alerts issued by the weather bureau, and take necessary precautions against the cold. The public should also be mindful of the daily weather changes, dress warmly to stay healthy.
As for the weather next week in Taiwan, Wu Derong mentioned that the latest model simulations from various countries indicate clear and stable weather across the region from the afternoon of the 13th to the 14th. Cold air will gradually weaken, with temperatures still on the lower side in the early mornings and evenings. Another cold front is expected to approach on the 15th, with simulation models indicating weaker intensity compared to the current wave. However, given the frequent adjustments in various country models, continuous observation is necessary.
