In preparation for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, Manhattan’s Times Square will host an unprecedented cross-time zone celebration this summer. Symbolizing the arrival of the new year, the “Times Square Crystal Ball” will conduct eight ball drop ceremonies for the first time. Starting from the morning of July 3rd, the countdown will traverse time zones from Guam all the way to American Samoa, connecting regions across the United States to collectively welcome Independence Day on July 4th, creating a nearly 24-hour historic moment.
The non-profit organization America250 and One Times Square announced the full celebration plan on the 20th. The event will kick off at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on July 3rd, starting with the ball drop for the Chamorro Time Zone covering Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. It will then proceed sequentially through Puerto Rico and various time zones of the continental U.S., extending to the Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska, and Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zones, culminating with the final ball drop in American Samoa at 7 a.m. on July 4th. The overall event spans nearly 24 hours, creating a “relay-style countdown” progressing from east to west.
For the first time, the Times Square Crystal Ball will drop eight times as part of the same celebration, with each time zone featuring a unique design to showcase regional characteristics. The countdown in New York City at 11:59 p.m. on July 3rd will be the focal point, symbolizing the East Coast officially entering July 4th, and will be broadcast nationwide and globally via television and the internet.
America250 Chairperson Rosie Rios stated that this plan is not just a countdown event, but a unifying moment that spans time zones and brings the nation together, allowing people from Guam, New York, Alaska, and American Samoa to participate.
In addition to the countdown ceremony, the events on July 3rd will include music performances and special programs, extending to the celebrations in Los Angeles on July 4th. Across the country on July 4th, the “America’s Block Party” events will be held simultaneously, incorporating a charity initiative called “Giving 4th,” aiming to make it the largest charity giving day in American history, encouraging people to engage in philanthropic actions mid-year.
In New York, One Times Square will host reservation-based events open to the public on July 4th and 5th. The “America’s Block Party in the Sky” on July 4th will take place on the 19th-floor observation deck, providing a 360-degree view of the Manhattan skyline and showcasing elements of American summer culture. On July 5th, the “America’s Day of Reflection” will display the Declaration of Independence engraved on the glass walls for people to read and take photos, as well as offer the opportunity to write blessings and reflective messages, with related confetti to be released during this year’s New Year’s Eve event.
The organizers noted that the aforementioned activities will prioritize the participation of frontline responders, medical personnel, and military personnel along with veterans, with ticketing details and participation methods to be announced soon.
