Hong Kong artist Julian Cheung revealed in an interview on August 30 that his wife, Anita Yuen (Liang Liang), has been buying fewer handbags lately and has already quit her addiction to playing mahjong, indicating a significant change in her lifestyle. This news has surprised many netizens who have been following their lives closely.
During a recent concert in Guangzhou, Julian Cheung coincidentally celebrated his 55th birthday. In an interview with a Chinese media outlet, he jokingly mentioned that his way of celebrating his birthday is still working hard and playing mahjong with friends in his spare time. He also revealed that his wife Anita Yuen has quit playing mahjong and now prefers watching dramas and playing games.
When asked whether Anita Yuen, who was once known for her love of collecting various designer handbags (especially Hermès), is still obsessively buying bags, Julian Cheung denied it, stating that she now buys very few bags.
Netizens were quick to tease that the former “bag-buying fanatic” Anita Yuen has undergone a transformation and many jokingly said that Julian Cheung’s wallet is finally safe now.
In fact, Julian Cheung disclosed at the end of last year during the launch event of the new drama “City of Brilliance” that Anita Yuen, who used to love buying handbags, has recently lost interest in these luxury items and even shows much less enthusiasm for shopping trips. He admitted that he is a bit worried and sometimes jokes with Anita Yuen, suggesting, “How about buying two bags?” in order to confirm whether something is bothering her. Many netizens joked that this reflex action was trained over the years of being in a “bag-buying routine”.
Julian Cheung revealed in earlier years on a program that Anita Yuen is famous in the industry as a “bag-buying fanatic” who, regardless of her mood, had to buy a bag. Once, when asked on a show why she liked Paris, her answer was, “Because Paris has Hermès,” leaving Julian Cheung amused and speechless. Her constant buying habits, the urge to buy whenever she sees something, have made “How many bags does Anita Yuen actually have?” a big mystery in the entertainment circle.
As for her obsession with buying bags, Anita Yuen once said, “Bags can cure all ailments.” Being a doting husband, Julian Cheung is well aware of this, and online legends often spread about Anita Yuen’s “buy, buy, buy” and Julian Cheung’s “swipe, swipe, swipe”.
In the past, Julian Cheung often joked on shows about Anita Yuen’s extravagant spending on bags and even during high-altitude challenges, he would shout to the camera, “Wife, please stop buying bags.” Little did he expect that now Anita Yuen has actually reduced her purchases, making him anxious.
Despite his frequent complaints, Julian Cheung still presents Anita Yuen with new handbags on her birthday, showcasing his deep love for her. As their 19-year-old son, Zhang Mu Tong, gradually grows up and begins to make a name for himself in music and other fields, the couple’s attention has shifted more towards family bonding and their child’s development.
Julian Cheung mentioned that Anita Yuen now prefers staying at home to watch dramas, while he is there to pass her water, cut fruits, and accompany her. Previously, she found security through shopping, but now she enjoys spending time with her family more, like going shopping for daily necessities with their son “Zhang Mu Tong,” adding a lot more everyday interactions to their family life.
Currently, Julian Cheung’s concert tour is ongoing. Although the couple’s acting engagements have decreased, they continue to receive commercial endorsements and invitations for variety shows. In an interview, Julian Cheung jokingly mentioned that upon knowing his wife no longer buys bags, he finally “let out a sigh of relief as savings are now increasing.”
