Caribbean vacation hotspot, the well-known beach resort “Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach” in the Dominican Republic was engulfed in flames on Friday local time (June 19), resulting in at least 1 death, 9 injuries, and the emergency evacuation of approximately 1,690 guests.
The fire broke out around 11 a.m. at the four-star resort located in Bayahibe, La Altagracia province. Bayahibe is famous for its crystal-clear waters and pristine white sand beaches, making it a popular destination among American and international tourists.
Juan Manuel Mendez, the director of the Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center, mentioned that the fire claimed one life on the spot, with at least 9 injuries, 3 of whom were taken to the hospital for treatment, while 6 received medical treatment on-site.
According to CBS reports, the deceased was identified as an Italian female.
The emergency center issued a statement indicating that around 1,690 guests staying at the resort have been relocated to other hotels. Additionally, the nearby Viva Wyndham resort “Dominicus Palace” remains unaffected by the fire and continues its operations as usual.
Videos captured by bystanders showed the flames rapidly spreading within the resort, with several thatched roof buildings engulfed in the fire, thick smoke and flames billowing into the sky, as a large number of tourists swam in the sea not far from the blaze.
Local firefighters struggled to contain the fire, with additional fire crews from the nearby La Romana area also rushing to the scene to assist in extinguishing the flames. Initial investigations suggest that the rapid spread of the fire may be attributed to the thatched roofs of many structures within the resort, with the strong winds at the time aiding in the fire’s rapid escalation.
Authorities have stated that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
A spokesperson for Viva Resorts by Wyndham mentioned that they are currently clarifying the sequence of events and refraining from further comments as the investigation is ongoing.
