On May 17, 2026, it was reported that Wang Xiaodong, a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Vice Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, has been implicated. He served as the governor of Hubei Province and resigned after the outbreak of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, retiring to a secondary position in the CPPCC.
The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission of the Communist Party of China announced on May 17 that Wang Xiaodong is suspected of serious violations of discipline and laws and is currently undergoing disciplinary review and supervision investigation.
Wang Xiaodong was born in January 1960 in Xinfeng, Jiangxi Province. He holds a postgraduate degree from the Central Party School and started working in August 1983.
Earlier in his career, Wang Xiaodong held positions in Jiangxi before being transferred to Guizhou, where he served as the secretary of the Guizhou Provincial Party Committee’s Office and subsequently held various roles within the provincial government. In 2000, he became the Secretary of the Guiyang Municipal Party Committee.
In December 2000, Wang Xiaodong was promoted to the Guizhou Provincial Party Standing Committee and Secretary of the Guiyang Municipal Party Committee. In May 2007, he was appointed a Standing Committee Member of the Guizhou Provincial Party Committee and Deputy Governor.
In December 2011, Wang Xiaodong was appointed to work in Hubei Province, where he held positions such as Standing Committee Member and Deputy Governor of the Hubei Provincial Party Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Secretary of the Provincial Political and Legal Committee.
In September 2016, Wang Xiaodong became the Acting Governor of Hubei Province and in January 2017, he officially became the Governor. In May 2021, he left his position and in June, he became a member of the National Committee of the CPPCC and Vice Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee before this announcement of investigation.
Notably, following the outbreak of the Wuhan pandemic, the top leaders of Hubei Province and Wuhan City at that time came under fire for their inadequate epidemic prevention and control measures. In May 2021, it was confirmed by state media that Wang Xiaodong would no longer be in charge of the Hubei provincial government.
It is worth mentioning that since the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, three middle-level officials from Hubei Province, Jiang Chaoliang, Zhou Xianwang, and Wang Xiaodong, have been implicated. Wang Xiangxi, who was removed from his post in January, also had a long career in Hubei.
With the announcement of Wang Xiaodong’s downfall, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission have now announced that 25 senior officials are under investigation in 2026. The previous 24 officials include Tian Xuebin, Li Xu, Gu Jun, Zhang Jianlong, Yang Hongyong, Bao Hui, Sun Shaocheng, Wang Xiangxi, Lian Ji, Xiao Jie, Xu Yiding, Yi Lianhong, Han Song, Lei Siwei, Hu Henghua, Zhou Liang, Guo Yonghang, Yue Puyu, Ma Xingrui, Wang Wenling, Yao Yuzhou, Ding Yexian, Luo Lin, and Fei Gaoyun.
