Socialist Democrats Claim to “Control New York City”, Pressuring Hochul to Tax the Rich

After the release of the results of the New York City Democratic primary, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) who secured significant victories in key districts, have boldly claimed to have “taken control of New York City.” They are now setting their sights on the relatively moderate New York Governor, Hochul, demanding her acceptance of the “tax the rich” plan. This rapid expansion of the left-wing force is drawing attention from the political and business circles in New York.

DSA members achieved a sweeping victory in the New York City Democratic primary on June 23. Candidates supported by the DSA defeated the Democratic Party establishment candidates, further expanding the influence of the socialist camp in federal, state, and local governments.

On the evening of June 24, DSA held a conference call, with Osman Chaudhary, co-chair of the organization’s election working group, stating on the X platform that DSA has received the “authorization” of 3 million New York City residents, hence, “we control these areas.”

“At tonight’s DSA phone conference, the message was crystal clear: we claim absolute control over New York City and warn challengers not to attempt it lightly,” Chaudhary said. “Don’t bother. We control these areas.”

Chaudhary noted that representatives of these 3 million residents of New York City are “spread across various levels of government, with socialist presence in some communities, and even in various levels of government.”

DSA leaders specifically mentioned areas such as Astoria and Ridgewood in Queens, calling them “People’s Republics,” while the left-wing strongholds spanning parts of Queens and Brooklyn are dubbed by outsiders as the “Communist Corridor.” These areas have become important strongholds for democratic socialists in recent years.

Meanwhile, DSA has accelerated the left-wing agenda after the primary. According to the New York Post, DSA has now shifted its focus to Governor Hochul, demanding her support for raising tax rates for high-income earners and levying more taxes on the wealthy.

Co-chair Gustavo Gordillo of DSA stated that Hochul had previously refused to support the “tax the rich” policy, which has disgruntled many left-wing supporters. Earlier this year, Hochul was shouted at by leftists with “Tax the Rich” slogans during an event.

Gordillo warned that if Hochul successfully wins re-election as governor in November, DSA will leverage the newly elected socialist members of Congress and state legislatures to continue pressuring the state government. He even openly stated, “We will come for her.”

This momentum has also left the New York business and real estate sectors uneasy. Business figures believe that the new generation of DSA candidates advocating for stricter rent control, higher corporate and wealth taxes, and even proposing government takeovers of problematic properties, could further impact the investment environment in New York.
