On Monday, June 1st, officials from the United States and the United Kingdom announced that a US soldier and a British soldier had died during a military exercise in Iraq on Sunday. They did not disclose further details about the incident.
The US Army released this information on social media platform X, stating that both fatalities occurred on Sunday at an airbase in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of Erbil in northern Iraq. Currently, the US military is still stationed in the region.
The US Army stated, “We will not release the identity of the deceased US soldier until 24 hours after the family has been notified.”
In a separate statement, the UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that the family of the deceased British soldier had been notified and requested a “buffer period” before more details are disclosed.
In the statement, the UK Ministry of Defence wrote, “With deep sorrow, we confirm that on May 31, 2026 (Sunday), a training accident occurred in northern Iraq, resulting in the tragic death of a British Army soldier.”
UK Defence Secretary John Healey expressed “deep sadness” at the death of the British soldier in the statement. A video on social media showed Healey announcing the soldier’s death in the UK Parliament.
The US has been reducing its troops responsible for combatting the “Islamic State” group in Iraq. However, given the US’s efforts to strengthen relations with the Kurds, the US military maintains a certain military presence in the Kurdish region.
In December last year, the US inaugurated the construction of a large new consulate complex in the Kurdish regional capital of Erbil, highlighting the US’s strategic diplomatic and military engagement in the region.
Less than a month before this fatal incident, two US soldiers died in a cliff accident while hiking during a vacation in Morocco. The two soldiers were reported missing on May 2 after participating in the annual multinational military exercise codenamed “African Lion.”
