Hunan Changde School Collision Case: Driver Involved Sentenced to Death Penalty with Reprieve.

On November 19, a hit-and-run incident involving an off-road vehicle occurred outside the entrance of Yong’an Elementary School in Changde City, Hunan Province. On December 23, the perpetrator, Huang Wen, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for the crime of endangering public safety.

At the trial held by the Changde Intermediate People’s Court on December 23, the case of Huang Wen crashing into elementary school students was reviewed. According to the court’s accusation, the defendant Huang Wen, due to investment losses, family conflicts, and other reasons, chose to vent personal emotions by deliberately targeting a crowded area and the peak hours of students entering school, primarily targeting elementary school students for his criminal actions of driving and hitting pedestrians, showing extremely malicious intent. Huang Wen was sentenced to death for endangering public safety by dangerous means with a two-year reprieve, as well as deprivation of political rights for life.

On the morning of November 9, around 7:37 am, 39-year-old Huang Wen drove a white compact off-road vehicle and accelerated near Shuangtan Road of Yuxia Street in Dingcheng District of Changde City, repeatedly crashing into a crowd of elementary school students and others. After the vehicle malfunctioned and stopped, Huang Wen got out of the car with a weapon to attack people. According to official reports, the incident caused 7 people with minor injuries, 16 people with slight injuries, and 7 people with injuries below slight, including 18 elementary school students.

A viral video circulating online shows the chaotic scene during the incident, which happened during school rush hour. Numerous elementary students were seen running in panic from the road into the school campus, with some lying on the ground. One student was shown desperately shouting “help” while another student held a fallen female classmate’s hand. The driver, Huang Wen, was later subdued by bystanders, and the site was filled with confusion and chaos.
