On May 3rd, a tragic incident occurred at the cliff swing attraction in the Maluyan Waterfall Scenic Area in Huayun City, Sichuan Province, China. A 16-year-old girl named Liu tragically plunged to her death as a result of a safety device failure during her swing experience. Prior to the activity, Liu repeatedly cried out “it’s not secured”, but the staff did not recheck the safety equipment.
Several Chinese netizens released videos of the incident on May 5th. One video showed a female visitor wearing a safety harness being slowly guided out of the secure area, repeatedly saying “it’s not secured”. Soon after she glided out of the safety platform, she immediately fell off the cliff. Another video depicted the injured woman lying on the ground covered in blood.
According to online accounts, the accident occurred on May 3rd at the Maluyan Waterfall Scenic Area in Huayun City, Sichuan. During the fall, the woman hit the cliff wall. The vests worn by the on-site staff were marked with the words “Chongqing Adventure Camp”.
Public information reveals that the “Chongqing Adventure Camp” is an outdoor adventure enterprise.
On May 5th, mainland media journalists contacted the company, and a staff member confirmed the accident took place in Guang’an, Sichuan, stating that they were in discussions with the family and cooperating with local government investigations. The related project has been suspended, and further details are not being disclosed at this time.
Previously, the company’s official WeChat account had promoted various high-altitude experiences at the Maluyan Waterfall Scenic Area in Xikou, Huayun City.
Following the incident, the official account of the Maluyan Waterfall Scenic Area announced a temporary closure from May 4th to May 10th. When contacted by journalists, the staff mentioned that the closure was due to “equipment maintenance” before abruptly ending the call.
On May 5th, the Huayun City government issued a situation report, preliminarily identifying the incident as a corporate production safety liability accident, with individuals currently under investigation.
The victim, sixteen-year-old Liu, tragically lost her life in this incident. Following the incident, concerns were raised regarding the implementation of age restrictions, guardianship requirements, and safety inspections in managing high-risk activities at the scenic area.
In a government article from February 2025, it was highlighted that the Maluyan Rock Scenic Area features a typical river valley terrain with developed karst landforms. The area’s terrain is rugged with steep slopes, towering cliffs, and significant elevation changes. The waterfall in the area has a drop of 168 meters, twice the height of the famous Huangguoshu Falls, making it the tallest waterfall in eastern Sichuan.
According to a report by the Chongqing Daily in April 2026, the Maluyan Rock Scenic Area in Xikou Town, Huayun City gained popularity among tourists due to its natural landscapes and various experiential activities, becoming a hot spot for visitors in the surrounding areas.
