New York City Parks announced on July 12 that they will be hosting the first “Parents’ Night Out” event on August 16. The city government will transform into a free “super babysitter” to take care of children for four hours so that busy parents can relax, watch a movie, or enjoy a peaceful date.
Mayor Mamdani stated in a declaration, “Every parent knows that having a few hours of personal time is a luxury — but it shouldn’t be. That’s why we are launching the first ‘Parents’ Night Out’. Parents can go see a movie, take care of personal matters, or go on a date without worrying about who will take care of the kids or how much they need to spend on a babysitter. Making New York City more affordable is not just about lowering the cost of living, but also about giving back time to its residents.”
This unprecedented welfare activity adopts a completely free, first-come-first-served reservation system, and on-site registrations will not be accepted.
Online registration opened at 8 a.m. on Monday (July 13) and will continue until July 20. The event is only open to school-aged children between 6 and 13 years old.
Each of the five boroughs will designate a large community recreation center to participate, with a limit of 100 children per location (a total of 500 slots citywide).
The event locations include Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center in Brooklyn; Highbridge Recreation Center in Manhattan; Al Oerter Recreation Center in Queens; Kwame Ture Recreation Center in the Bronx; and Greenbelt Recreation Center in Staten Island.
On the day of the event, parents who have successfully registered can drop off their children at the designated centers at 4 p.m. and pick them up before 8 p.m.
