Since May 19th, a large number of people in Yushi County, Kaifeng City, Henan Province have been experiencing mass vomiting and diarrhea incidents, leading to overcrowded hospitals. It wasn’t until the 21st that officials reported that contamination of a water source well due to rainwater backflow was the cause. The public has expressed dissatisfaction with the authorities’ reporting and response measures.
On May 21st, a joint investigation team established in the county issued a notice stating that on the night of May 19th, residents in the urban area of Yushi County began experiencing abnormal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. The investigation revealed that after heavy rain on May 19th, rainwater backflowed into a water source well for tap water, causing sudden contamination of drinking water and resulting in discomfort among the population.
Mrs. Li from the county told a reporter that she washed cherries with tap water on the evening of May 19th, and later experienced symptoms such as diarrhea. She mentioned that her symptoms were mild compared to others who also had fever. Reports indicate that the water quality tested from the tap water exceeded the standard for bacteria, although the specific bacteria were unknown.
Despite receiving some medication from the hospital, Mrs. Li mentioned that the hospital was overwhelmed with people seeking emergency treatment. She highlighted that numerous students had taken leave to visit the hospital, with thousands affected across various schools and communities.
She further revealed that the tap water drawn from the pipes on the night of the 19th was black and murky, and she mentioned facing difficulties in reaching the tap water company by phone.
Another individual informed the reporter that the hospital mentioned a surge in patients experiencing vomiting and diarrhea over the past few days, with many students seeking treatment due to symptoms. She expressed discomfort in her abdomen, while her child exhibited severe symptoms of diarrhea.
Mr. Zhang shared with the reporter that there were undoubtedly tens of thousands of people in the county experiencing vomiting and diarrhea. He expressed frustration over the situation, emphasizing the lack of water supply and uncertainty regarding future arrangements.
A high school student named Xiaojun (pseudonym) from a school in the county mentioned that he had experienced four episodes of diarrhea on the morning of the 21st. He reflected that nearly all schools in Henan were facing a similar situation, with no response or solutions provided, and students feeling confined within their school premises.
According to official reports, comprehensive testing is being conducted on all water source wells currently in use across the county. Apart from one water source well being contaminated, others were deemed of acceptable quality. The contaminated well has been sealed off, and operations such as draining, disinfecting the reservoirs, and water supply pipelines have been carried out. New tap water is being tested as a precautionary measure, and water supply in the urban area has been restored.
However, many residents expressed skepticism and dissatisfaction with the official notification and the government’s response measures. Mrs. Li mentioned the lack of support from the recently replaced county leaders, leaving the residents to suffer without proper guidance. She noted a lack of specific details regarding the pollutants and the testing process, undermining trust among the public.
Numerous people took to social media to voice their grievances and questions:
– Concerns about the intensity of past rain events without similar repercussions like rainwater backflow.
– Queries about which water source is contaminated, referencing incidents in residential areas and the impact on health.
– Criticisms about the seemingly neglectful attitude towards public health, particularly concerns about long-term health consequences similar to vaccines.
– Calls for accountability and compensation for losses incurred by affected individuals.
– Lack of faith in official reports, emphasizing the need for independent verification of water contamination sources.
– Suggestions to preserve samples for future investigation and compensation claims related to contaminated tap water.
The situation has stirred widespread discontent and uncertainty among the residents, with demands for transparency, accountability, and swift actions to ensure public health and safety amidst the water contamination crisis.
