A Chinese Family Watches 250th Independence Day Fireworks: Long Live America

On July 4th, 2026, many residents of New York and New Jersey came out with their families, dressed in red, white, and blue T-shirts, wearing flag-colored earrings or other accessories, holding small flags in their hands. They gathered along the East River or the Hudson River, resembling a festive crowd, all eager to look up and witness the brilliant Independence Day fireworks on the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, collectively expressing their patriotism as Americans.

Families like Kevin and Amber’s, who live in a high-rise apartment by the Hudson River, invited both sets of parents to their home on this special day. As night fell on Independence Day, they overlooked the two Macy’s barges on the river from the high altitude, the locations where the holiday fireworks would be launched.

Half an hour before the scheduled fireworks show, the riverbank was already packed with spectators. People of all ages sat or stood, eagerly awaiting the spectacle. At that moment, flashes of lightning appeared behind the Manhattan skyline, shimmering in the distance. The news spread: the fireworks display was starting earlier than planned.

The sound of explosions filled the air as one by one, colorful bursts of fireworks shot into the sky, blooming into spectacular displays high above. Viewed from a 200-meter-high window, the exploding fireworks seemed to be rushing towards you, evoking involuntary exclamations of awe.

Kevin’s parents immigrated to the United States over thirty years ago and found success by starting a restaurant business. They raised their children, who went on to attend Ivy League universities and have successful careers. Now retired and living in a large house, they earn a living through rental income.

“We feel very fortunate to watch the 250th Independence Day celebration with our family and many friends,” Kevin’s father said. “The best thing about America is its freedom and democracy. As long as you work hard and diligently, everyone has a fair chance. That’s why starting a business is somewhat easier here – everyone has equal opportunities to achieve the American Dream.”

Kevin, the host inviting everyone to watch the fireworks, expressed, “The scenery here is unbelievably beautiful. Being together with everyone feels fantastic.”

Born in America, Kevin believes that the best thing about the United States is “opportunity.” “People often say that this is the ‘land of opportunity,’ a country full of possibilities. I genuinely believe that America is the greatest country on Earth.”

His wife Amber, who immigrated to the US as a teenager and has since become a naturalized US citizen, believes that the best thing about America is “freedom.” Her American dream is to raise the next generation in the country.

“So far, we have been doing well, and we hope to provide a better future life for our family here, just like our parents did for us, providing a fulfilling life for the children,” Amber said.

Kevin’s sister, also a Chinese-American born in New York, expressed pride in her heritage. “People from all over the world come to New York. The diversity here is incredible. Being able to see such a beautiful view with family is amazing!”

As the first fireworks shot up into the sky, Amber’s aunt exclaimed, “Long live America!”

“The greatness of America does not lie in material possessions but in values such as human rights, respect for individuals, freedom of speech, and religious freedom,” she said. “That’s why I say: ‘Long live America!'”

Amber’s mother had no more words to add; her desire to apply for US citizenship illustrated her attitude towards America. “I am applying to become a US citizen and want to be a proud American.”

Amber’s father expressed his hope for America to remain a “beacon” of the free world. “We are currently in a deep blue state that is unintentionally heading towards communism. Therefore, I truly hope America returns to its essence, maintaining its spirit of freedom and founding principles. It should be a place where the American Dream can truly be realized.”
