Coal mine explosion in Qinyuan County, Shanxi Province: 4 dead, 16 critically injured, 90 trapped

In Longzhiyu Coal Mine of Tongzhou Coal Industry Group in Qinyuan County, Changzhi City, Shanxi Province, China, a carbon monoxide exceeding standard accident occurred on Friday (May 22) evening local time, resulting in 4 deaths, 16 people in critical condition, and 90 others still trapped underground.

According to a report by the Chinese state media Xinhua on Saturday (May 23) Beijing time, at 9:43 p.m. local time on the 22nd, the carbon monoxide sensor in the mine suddenly issued an over-standard alarm. At the time of the incident, there were a total of 247 miners underground, and the mine operator immediately activated the emergency procedures, organized personnel evacuation, and reported to the relevant departments.

As of 3:33 a.m. on Saturday morning Beijing time, 157 people have been successfully brought to the surface, but 4 of them have unfortunately died despite rescue efforts. Currently, 90 people are still trapped underground, with 16 of them in critical condition. The local fire, medical, and mine rescue forces are working together to advance the search and rescue operation.

This is not the only mining accident that has occurred recently in Shanxi Province. According to a previous report by wire news, in the early hours of April 2 this year, a roof caving accident occurred in the mining process at the Zhongmei Guanjiaya Coal Industry Company in Xing County, Lvliang City, Shanxi Province, where the upper strata collapsed suddenly.

At that time, 4 miners were trapped, and several hours later, when all the trapped personnel were brought to the surface by rescue workers, it was discovered that all 4 individuals showed no signs of life.

Shanxi is an important coal-producing region in China, where mining accidents frequently occur. Currently, the reasons behind the two aforementioned mining accidents are still under investigation.
