Recently, the New York Taiwan Center Elderly Center held a birthday celebration for the elderly born in August, where 16 seniors celebrated their birthdays together. Two elderly individuals, when interviewed, shared their insights on healthy living, both emphasizing the importance of “gratitude” and “letting go” in life. They believe that maintaining a broad-minded and cheerful attitude is a critical factor for a healthy and long life.
Hundreds of elderly gathered on August 19 under the organization of President Chen Yiming at the center. They sang birthday songs, cut cakes, and enjoyed singing and talent performances.
94-year-old Su Caiqian shared that she doesn’t have many dietary restrictions, stating, “I eat everything, but not in excess”. She values a person’s mindset more than what they eat, emphasizing the need to relax, be accommodating, and not to get angry.
“Don’t argue with others, give way to others, and let the last word be with them,” Su Caiqian said. She believes in interacting with others by speaking less and avoiding unnecessary disputes. She used to play golf frequently when she was young and came to the United States in 1974, where she has lived for 52 years.
86-year-old Zhang Wenxiong plays table tennis, goes for walks, and sings every day. He mentioned that he is in good physical condition without any health issues. As a Christian, he often reminds himself that “a joyful heart is good medicine”.
Zhang Wenxiong stated that the key to maintaining a good mood is to “be grateful in all things”: “As long as you are thankful, worries will fade away.” He added, “Life is accompanied by toil and troubles, so be thankful for the good things and even the unpleasant matters.”
The birthday celebration also featured various singing and talent performances. Overseas Chinese Affairs Commissioner Zhong Wenzhong and his partner Li Jialing sang “Little Elves in the Sky,” composed and written by Zhong Wenzhong. There were joyful choir performances led by Wang Huijin, a modern dance performance led by Zhuang Fumei, and a choir performance led by Wang Yizhu and Lin Yaling at the center. The elderly attendees were filled with laughter and joy during the event, creating a harmonious atmosphere.
