Young People Cause Trouble in California’s Affluent Area, Police Arrest 402 People.

On July 7, 2026, a large number of young people flocked to Newport Beach in Orange County, California, a wealthy area, on Independence Day. Influenced by TikTok and other social media posts, chaos erupted in the pier and surrounding areas, leading to a total of 402 arrests by the police from July 4 to 5.

City officials expressed concerns over the escalating danger and illegal activities as the crowd rapidly grew. They blocked roads, hindered the passage of emergency rescue vehicles, and threw fireworks and other projectiles towards law enforcement officers, crowded groups, and even families with children.

Videos circulating online captured the scenes of many incidents. These minors and young adults broke into stores for looting (including Pavilions supermarket on Balboa Avenue), stole street signs, uprooted palm trees, and left behind a significant amount of garbage in several areas.

During the chaos, a police officer was hit by a fireworks projectile and had to receive immediate medical treatment.

As the situation gradually spiraled out of control, authorities declared the gathering illegal and deployed over 350 police officers, along with personnel from 17 regional law enforcement agencies, to assist in clearing the area and ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

Online videos showed a group of police officers (some on horseback) charging onto the beach, causing young people to scream and scatter in all directions.

Officials stated that around 200 individuals were arrested for repeatedly defying police dispersal orders and continuing to gather near 28th Street. Others involved in incitement, violent and criminal behaviors, and endangering public safety were also detained and will face legal consequences.

Many local residents expressed dissatisfaction with the influx of out-of-town visitors, the illegal gatherings, and the chaos that ensued. They criticized outsiders, particularly young people from out of state, for disrupting local order and showing disrespect to the community on social media platforms.

Health and nutrition-focused influencer Ryan Rodal voiced his embarrassment over the events that took place in Newport Beach on Independence Day, attributing it to TikTok. He mentioned observing many young people posting videos online days before Independence Day, declaring their intention to gather at Newport Beach. These young people came from Los Angeles, the Inland Empire region, and various parts of the United States.

“The looting and destruction that occurred in this city cannot be tolerated. Next year, all outsiders should be banned from entering Newport Beach,” Rodal stated. “We can check IDs, prevent outsiders from parking in the peninsula area, in any way possible, we must absolutely prevent such chaos from happening again.”

On July 4, the fire department handled a total of 102 emergency incidents, including 10 fires, and transported 44 injured individuals to hospitals.

Officials reported that by early July 5, city personnel had cleared the area, cleaned the streets, sidewalks, and public spaces, restoring the environment of the Balboa Peninsula community. Over the past weekend, the police had been maintaining deployment in the area.
