Wuhan officials from four municipal departments consecutively investigated and penalized; former mayor Cheng Yongwen rumored to have committed suicide.

In June 2026, a series of investigations were launched against high-ranking officials in Wuhan, China. Wang Xiangwang, former vice mayor of Wuhan, and Liu Zhihui, former secretary general of the Wuhan government, were among the officials facing scrutiny. The deputy director of the Hubei Provincial People’s Congress, and former mayor of Wuhan, Cheng Yongwen, had been out of the public eye for over a month since late May, leading to speculation following reports of his suicide after being questioned.

Liu Zhihui, who was under investigation, served as a key aide to former Wuhan mayor Zhou Xianwang. Cheng Yongwen had worked closely with Wang Xiaodong, former deputy governor and governor of Hubei Province. Zhou Xianwang and Wang Xiaodong had already been removed from their positions. Wang Zhonglin unexpectedly stepped down as Secretary of the Hubei Provincial Party Committee on May 30th, and his current whereabouts remain unknown.

On June 23, 2026, the website of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission of the Chinese Communist Party reported that Wang Xiangwang, former member of the Wuhan Municipal Committee and former Party Secretary of the Wuhan East Lake New Technology Development Zone, was under investigation for serious violations of discipline and law.

Public records show that Wang Xiangwang, a Wuhan native born in April 1962, had held various positions in Wuhan, including as Deputy Secretary of the Communist Youth League of Wuhan City, Deputy Secretary of the Jiangxia District Committee of Wuhan City, District Mayor of the Dongxihu District of Wuhan City, and Secretary of the Jiangxia District Committee of Wuhan City. He had also served as the Director of the Development and Reform Commission of Wuhan City, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, and Deputy Mayor of Wuhan City. From January 2019 to January 2022, he was a member of the Standing Committee of the Wuhan Municipal Committee and the Party Secretary of the Wuhan East Lake New Technology Development Zone.

Wang Xiangwang became the third senior official from Wuhan to come under investigation in June 2026. Prior to that, on June 17, 2026, Dan Changchun, former member of the Wuhan Municipal People’s Congress Standing Committee, was announced to be under investigation for serious violations of discipline and law.

Dan Changchun, born in June 1960 in Dangyang, Hubei Province, had held various positions in Wuhan before being investigated. He served as Deputy Secretary of the Wuhan High-Tech State-owned Holding (Group) Corporation Party Committee, Executive Deputy General Manager, and Director, as well as Deputy Director and Member of the Working Committee of the Wuhan Donghu New Technology Development Zone.

On June 1, 2026, Liu Zhihui, former Party Secretary of the Wuhan Business School, was also placed under investigation. Liu Zhihui, born in February 1964 in Zhongxiang, Hubei Province, had previously held positions such as Deputy Director of the Wuhan Municipal Committee’s Policy Research Office, Dean and Party Secretary of the Wuhan Academy of Social Sciences, Deputy Secretary General of the Wuhan Municipal Government, and Director of the Wuhan Municipal Government Office.

On June 22, 2026, it was reported that Peng Tao, former Secretary of the East-West Lake District Committee of Wuhan and former Party Secretary of the Lingang Airport Economic and Technological Development Zone, had been expelled from the Chinese Communist Party and dismissed from public office. Peng Tao was removed from his position in December 2025 while still in office.

The report accused Peng Tao of accepting gifts and gift cards in violation of regulations, attending banquets that could potentially compromise the fair execution of official duties, and exploiting his authority for personal gain by engaging in corrupt practices related to engineering projects, unlawfully accepting substantial sums of money.

According to publicly available information, Peng Tao, born in August 1969 in Wuhan, Hubei Province, held various government positions before his expulsion. He had served as Deputy District Mayor, Member of the District Committee, and Secretary of the Political and Legal Committee in the Jiang’an District of Wuhan City.
