Which public university in the United States has the best value for money in 2026?

A recent report on “The Most Cost-Effective Public Universities in the United States in 2026” has been released, evaluating over 500 public universities, with the University of Florida ranking first in the nation based on three criteria: overall cost, graduation rate, and median graduate income.

The report, published by the financial technology company SmartAsset, used public universities with costs below the median of similar schools as the screening threshold. It then calculated a composite score based on two indicators: the combined graduation rate after 6 years of enrollment and the median income after 10 years of enrollment for students receiving federal financial aid, selecting the top 50 schools with the highest scores. All data are based on information released in March 2026, and SmartAsset noted that the data may not reflect the latest circumstances.

The University of Florida has an annual cost of $22,523, a graduation rate of 91%, and a median graduate income of $71,588, securing the top spot in the rankings. Purdue University ranks second with an annual cost of $24,591, a graduation rate of 83%, and an income of $72,424. Baruch College in New York follows closely behind, with a low cost of $14,170 and a median income of $75,971, placing third.

The report highlights that among the 50 schools included in the rankings, California leads with 11 institutions, followed by New York with 8. Pennsylvania, on the other hand, does not have any public university in the rankings, making it the only populous state without representation.

Looking at the top 20 ranked schools, California, New York, and Florida together account for 14 schools. Among them, several City University of New York (CUNY) system schools, including Baruch College, City College of New York, and Hunter College, made it to the list with annual costs below $15,000, showcasing the coexistence of low costs and relatively good graduate incomes.

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, ranking fifth, stands out with a median graduate income of $76,489, the highest on the list. However, the school’s graduation rate is 57%, lower than most schools at the top of the list. The study explains that such cases illustrate that being the “most cost-effective” does not equate to having the “lowest cost” or the “highest graduation rate,” but rather involves a balance of cost, graduation rate, and income.
