The Indian Air Force confirmed that an Indian military aircraft crashed during a routine flight on Saturday (June 13), resulting in the death of five people on board.
The Indian Air Force released the above information on social media platform X, expressing deep regret over the incident.
According to the military’s statement, the crash occurred on Saturday morning at around 10 o’clock, in Jorhat, Assam. At that time, an Antonov An-32 transport aircraft was on a routine flight mission. The aircraft, a twin-engine turboprop military transport plane, crashed while landing at the air force base.
Following the accident, rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene.
The Indian Air Force confirmed that all five deceased were air force personnel. The military extended its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. Preliminary investigation and on-site crash handling are still ongoing.
Some Indian media reports mentioned that besides the five fatalities, one person on board was injured. However, the Indian Air Force did not confirm this information in multiple statements released on platform X.
According to the Hindustan Times, defense experts stated that the AN-32 is one of the main transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force, widely used for logistical support, troop movements, and supply missions, including operations in remote and complex terrains.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, stated that the state government has been informed of the incident and is awaiting detailed information from the relevant authorities.
Just over three months ago, another major plane crash occurred in Assam involving the Indian Air Force. On March 6, a Su-30MKI fighter jet on a training mission lost radar contact shortly after takeoff from Jorhat and crashed in the mountainous region of Karbi Anglong. Both pilots on board lost their lives in the accident.
