Lead Actor Not Invited to Debut Film, Shu Qi Jokes He Lacks a Condition

Just received the “Best Director Award” at the Busan International Film Festival, Shu Qi recently attended the Singapore International Film Festival with her directorial debut feature film “The Girl.” Sharing her journey as a director, actress, girl, and woman, Shu Qi was asked by a male audience why she didn’t cast her husband, Feng Delun, as the male lead in her directorial debut. She wittily responded that Feng Delun lacked a certain qualification, drawing laughter from the audience.

As the opening film of this year’s Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), “The Girl” had received recognition from various international film festivals before. During her sharing of her inner journey, Shu Qi expressed, “It took ten years to get to where I am now. The Singapore International Film Festival should be my final stop. I am truly grateful for these talented actors who have accompanied me to this point.”

Shu Qi openly admitted that directing was more challenging than she had imagined and humorously remarked on the potential for a second directorial project, saying, “Whether I will direct a second one depends on whether the Singapore audience likes this one or not.” Her witty response garnered enthusiastic applause and cheers from the audience, showing their most direct support for her.

When asked by a male audience member why she didn’t cast Feng Delun as the male lead in her directorial debut, Shu Qi wore a happy smile and replied, “This film is in Taiwanese dialect (Hokkien), and my husband is from Hong Kong and doesn’t speak Hokkien, so he lost that qualification!” Her humorous response once again amused the audience.

In 2016, while filming the movie “League of Gods” directed by Feng Delun in the Czech Republic, Shu Qi and Feng Delun suddenly announced their “marriage notice” during a break with the message: “Everything can go wrong, but don’t miss the one who loves you.” This story continues to be a topic of interest for many people. The couple first met on screen in 1998 when they co-starred in “The Love of the White Serpent” directed by Yang Fan. Shu Qi mentioned, “My husband says I’m difficult to deal with when I’m acting, so when he found out I wanted to be a director, he put his arm around me and said, ‘Haha, you have your day now.'” The couple’s sweet banter lit up the room.
