An unfortunate incident occurred at the construction site of BYD factory in the southern Hungarian city of Szeged, where a Chinese worker lost his life. According to the police of Csongrád-Csanád County, the fatal accident took place on Thursday, June 18th, within the construction site of the BYD factory.
The police reported that a truck, moving on the site, stopped next to a loader. After the loader operator signaled that the road was clear for passage, the truck started moving. At that moment, a worker appeared between the two vehicles and was hit by the moving truck.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel and helicopter rescue team, the man tragically passed away. The Hungarian National Ambulance Service confirmed that multiple emergency vehicles, including a rescue helicopter, rushed to the scene.
Paramedics stated, “Despite resuscitation efforts, the man unfortunately did not survive.” The police have initiated a criminal investigation into the suspected fatal traffic accident.
BYD released a statement regarding the incident, expressing shock and sorrow over the accident that occurred at the Szeged project construction site on June 18th. “Although we made every effort to provide emergency medical assistance, the subcontractor’s employee involved tragically lost his life. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” the statement added. “The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and the company will fully cooperate with the local authorities in their inquiries.”
This is the second fatal accident to occur in BYD’s flagship investment project construction in Hungary this year. In February, another worker fatality incident took place at the same site. Authorities launched an investigation into the suspected involuntary manslaughter after the accidents.
The Szeged factory is one of BYD’s most crucial overseas projects and, once completed, will be the first passenger car factory the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer establishes in Europe.
In May, the office of the Csongrád-Csanád County government filed a lawsuit against BYD, alleging that contaminated soil from the construction site had been dumped at several external locations beyond the environmental permit requirements.
Meanwhile, according to Telex, Li Ke, the Executive Vice President of BYD, recently stated that the assembly work at the Szeged factory is expected to commence in the fourth quarter, which marks a delay compared to the initial schedule.
Initially, the company had aimed to start the production of the Dolphin Surf compact electric car at the factory by the end of 2025.
