Three New York Restaurants Win ‘Oscars of the Restaurant Industry’ Award

The prestigious James Beard Awards, known as the “Oscars of the culinary world,” wrapped up in Chicago on Monday, June 15th. In this grand national culinary event, the dining scene in New York shone brightly, with three restaurants and culinary professionals from the city receiving significant honors, further solidifying New York’s already strong position in the world of food and drink.

The highlight of the awards ceremony was the coveted title of “Best New Restaurant” which went to Lei, a refined little eatery in Chinatown. Located on Doyers Street in Manhattan, this intimate restaurant with only 24 seats was co-founded by Annie Shi and Patty Lee. Lei stood out with its creative menu that blends Chinese flavors with an extensive wine list that can be likened to an encyclopedia, making it one of the most sought-after dining spots in all of New York. Winning this award signifies Lei’s triumph over many strong contenders across the country, successfully claiming the top spot.

Another major award was clinched by Chef Hooni Kim, who won the title of “Best Chef in New York State” for his restaurant Meju in Long Island City, Queens. Meju is a private Korean tasting counter restaurant that delves deep into and presents traditional Korean fermentation techniques (including their own brewed sauces and ingredients), earning acclaim nationwide. In the spring, Meju ranked fourth on the “Top 100 New York Restaurants” list compiled by New York media.

The final local accolade was awarded to the Italian restaurant Borgo in the NoMad district of Manhattan. Lee Campbell, the beverage director at Borgo, was honored with the “Outstanding Beverage Service Professional” award, recognizing his outstanding performance in the fields of wine, spirits management, and hospitality service. Since opening at the end of 2024, Borgo has quickly gained immense popularity in New York with its authentic Italian dishes, curated wine list featuring natural wines, and retro dining atmosphere.

Industry experts note that while not all New York finalists in the competition could emerge as winners, sweeping awards in the three core categories of “Best New Restaurant”, “Best Chef”, and “Outstanding Beverage Service” highlights New York’s deep-rooted status as the culinary capital of the country.
