Indian senior officials have stated that the Indian Coast Guard and Navy continued their search and rescue operations in the eastern waters of India on Sunday (August 23). This comes after a cargo ship flying the Panamanian flag and carrying 24 crew members sank. As of now, two Chinese crew members have been rescued.
Director of the Indian Maritime Administration, Shyam Jagannathan, told Reuters that the two rescued Chinese seafarers reported that the ship tilted on Friday (August 21) and sank within 8 minutes, forcing the crew to abandon ship.
Jagannathan mentioned that the chances of finding survivors usually drop significantly after 12 hours of the incident, but rescue teams are still carrying on with the search.
According to the Indian Coast Guard, there are still 22 crew members missing on the “Ocean Winner,” including 18 Chinese citizens, 3 Myanmar citizens, and 1 Bangladeshi citizen.
The Indian Navy posted on the social media platform X that they are closely coordinating with the Coast Guard to search for the remaining crew members.
A spokesperson for the Coast Guard stated that two vessels have been dispatched from Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly known as Port Blair) to participate in the rescue operation.
Based on the initial report from the Indian Maritime Administration, the cargo ship “Ocean Winner” departed from Paradip port on the east coast of India on Friday carrying a shipment of iron ore bound for China.
Government sources in India disclosed to Reuters that the ship sank approximately 240 nautical miles away from the port.
The cause of the shipwreck remains unclear.
