Pentagon Reaches Agreement with Leading AI Company to Boost Combat Capabilities

The Pentagon announced on Friday (May 1) that it has reached agreements with seven globally leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies. The advanced AI technologies from these companies will be deployed into the classified network of the Department of War for authorized combat operations. The Department of War stated that supporting combat personnel with advanced AI technology will help the U.S. military address “unprecedented emerging threats.”

According to a press release issued by the Pentagon on Friday, the seven companies that have reached agreements with the Department of War include SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Reflection, Microsoft, and Amazon AWS.

“These agreements accelerate the transformation of the U.S. military into a ‘AI-centric’ combat force and strengthen the ability of combat personnel to maintain decision superiority in various combat domains,” the Department of War said in the press release.

The Department of War also mentioned that integrating secure cutting-edge AI capabilities into the Department of Defense’s IL6 and IL7 network environments will simplify information integration, enhance situational awareness, and improve the decision-making capabilities of combat personnel in complex operational environments. The seven aforementioned companies will provide resources to deploy their capabilities in the IL6 and IL7 environments. This initiative aims to enable new capabilities in the three core areas of combat, intelligence, and enterprise operations, in support of the Department of War’s AI acceleration strategy.

“The Department of War and these strategic partners collectively believe that the United States’ leadership position in the field of AI is crucial for national security. This leadership position depends on a thriving domestic ecosystem that possesses numerous excellent model developers who can effectively utilize their abilities to support the Department of War’s various missions,” the Pentagon stated in the press release. “Under the direction of President Trump and Secretary Haggerse, the Department of War will continue to comprehensively support combat personnel with advanced AI technology to address unprecedented emerging threats in the future, and enhance our ‘Arsenal of Freedom’.”

The agreements between the Pentagon and the seven leading AI companies come at a time of intense competition between the United States and China in the field of artificial intelligence.

A research report released in June last year by the Insikt team of the U.S. cybersecurity consultancy firm Recorded Future revealed that the Chinese military has shown a strong interest in using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to support intelligence work, developing methods and systems to apply generative AI in executing intelligence tasks.

President Trump stated on April 25 that the United States aims to defeat China in multiple industry sectors. Currently, the U.S. holds a leading position in areas such as cryptocurrency and AI.

In the budget request for the 2027 fiscal year submitted to Congress in early April, Trump significantly increased the total defense budget from $1 trillion in the 2026 fiscal year to $1.5 trillion.

The investment areas in the 2027 fiscal year defense budget include artificial intelligence, space, the “Golden Dome” defense system, the F-47 sixth-generation fighter jet program, unmanned systems, and anti-drone systems.
