As the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre approaches, democracy activists in the Boston area have planned a commemorative event on June 2nd from 7pm to 9pm near the Chinatown Gate at the “Tiananmen Memorial Monument”.
The organizers have stated that no registration is required for this gathering and they hope that everyone will respect each other’s privacy. Attendees are encouraged to wear masks and hats as desired, and candles will be provided at the site.
For those in need of parking, the “51 Hudson Street” parking lot in Chinatown is available. It offers a special parking rate of $10 on Sundays to Thursdays from 5pm to 10pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm to 11pm.
The Boston “Tiananmen Memorial Monument” is located outside the “All Under Heaven” gate in Chinatown. The monument bears the inscription: “This park is dedicated to the Chinese democracy movement and in memory of the Chinese sons and daughters who sacrificed their lives for this movement at Tiananmen Square.” The monument was authorized by Boston Mayor Ray Flynn on September 10, 1989.
In recent times, various cities across the United States have held memorial events to commemorate the Tiananmen Square tragedy. Events have taken place in San Francisco’s Chinatown on May 26, such as a “Cleansing of the Statue of Democracy” activity, and a commemorative gathering in Los Angeles on May 18, among others.
