On May 31st, the New York City Police Department held a promotion ceremony at the New York City Police Academy. Ares Huang, the community liaison officer of the 109th Precinct, was promoted to Detective, with his superiors and colleagues attending to congratulate him.
The 109th Precinct Commander, Kevin Coleman, the auxiliary police supervisor, and several colleagues from the 109th Precinct were present at the promotion ceremony to extend their well wishes to Huang. As Huang stepped onto the stage to receive his certificate, Deputy Director of the Community Affairs Bureau, Mark T. Stewart, and Christine Bastedenbeck, in charge of the North Queens Command Center, warmly embraced him. The Police Commissioner, Edward Caban, presented him with the certificate.
Having served as a community liaison officer at the 109th Precinct for eight years, Huang expressed his pride and gratitude upon receiving the promotion. He thanked the precinct commander, leaders of the Community Affairs Bureau, his colleagues at the Police Department for their assistance and support, as well as his family for their silent dedication.
Huang stated that following his promotion, he will continue to serve as a community liaison officer at the 109th Precinct. He said, “Flushing is like my ‘second hometown,’ the Chinese community holds a special place in my heart. Here, I can continue to serve the Chinese community, shine brightly, and make more contributions.”
Huang, who arrived in the United States at the age of 18, is fluent in Mandarin and Shanghainese. During his university years, he participated in the NYPD’s “Community Partnerships” program for college students, entering the police academy in July 2011. After graduating from the academy, he was assigned to the 113th Precinct and then the 111th Precinct before being transferred to the 109th Precinct in October 2012. Since 2016, he has served as the community affairs liaison officer at the 109th Precinct. The 109th Precinct covers an area where over 60% of the population is of Asian descent, mostly Chinese. Prior to Huang’s assignment, there was no Mandarin-speaking community liaison officer at the precinct. His arrival has greatly facilitated communication and interaction between the Chinese community and the police department.
On that day, more than 300 individuals were promoted, and Police Commissioner Edward Caban presented certificates to each of the promoted officers. In his address, he expressed gratitude for the diligent work and dedication of these officers. Encouraging them, he said: “You have chosen to embrace new challenges, take on more responsibilities, chosen resilience and strength, and are prepared to accomplish the mission. I am proud of you.”
