In Hunan Province, a fire broke out in a residential building in the Lijiacong community of Yanfeng District in Hengyang City, resulting in 5 deaths and 2 injuries, according to the Emergency Management Bureau of Yanfeng District on May 12th.
This tragedy has once again raised public attention. Many netizens are questioning, “Why are there so many fires in China?”
A Weibo user named “SageJiaoBe” pointed out that the fire occurred at around 3 am when residents were mostly asleep, leading to a significantly shortened evacuation response time and increased casualties. Common issues in residential building fires include aging electrical wiring, cluttered hallways, blocked fire exits, and inadequate maintenance of fire safety equipment, all of which can cause rapid spread of fire and difficulty in escape.
Another Weibo user, “ButterDeer” expressed sorrow over the news of 5 fatalities in the Hengyang residential building fire. Behind every residential building fire, there are often multiple layers of hidden dangers: illegal and messy wiring, cluttered hallways, blocked fire exits, unauthorized charging of electric vehicles… These seemingly common minor issues ultimately converge into a deadly blaze that claims lives.
“Looking deeper, this exposes the formalism in fire safety propaganda and routine inspections in some communities – just putting up a few posters is not enough, the actual inspection and removal of hidden dangers in households are far from sufficient.”
