Dr. Mitchell Rosner, a nephrologist specializing in fluid and electrolyte imbalances, points out that dehydration can lead to a decrease in blood volume and blood pressure, forcing the heart to beat faster to maintain blood circulation. Loss of water and electrolytes can also trigger muscle cramps and weaken the body’s ability to regulate temperature.
Dr. James Winger, an expert in sports medicine studying how the body regulates fluid balance during exercise, mentions that a certain level of fluid loss during exercise is normal and should not be immediately deemed as dangerous. The body has physiological mechanisms to cope with these changes and encourage hydration.
However, continuous fluid loss without adequate replenishment is a cause for concern. Severe dehydration can potentially impact the kidneys, brain, and cardiovascular system.

For individuals over 65, the reliability of this test diminishes due to natural skin elasticity loss with age. This means that even if the body is not dehydrated, the skin’s return speed may slow down.
Dehydration can manifest in various forms. It is crucial to observe the overall situation rather than relying solely on one symptom. Some signs to be aware of include thirst, dry mouth, darker urine color, decreased urination frequency, headaches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, blurred consciousness, or fainting, which may indicate severe dehydration and require immediate medical attention.
It’s important to note that while dehydration is harmful, overhydration is also dangerous. Drinking excess water can dilute sodium in the bloodstream, causing potentially life-threatening hyponatremia, also known as water intoxication. The widely circulated advice of “eight glasses of water a day” is not applicable to everyone, as water needs vary from person to person.
In addition, hydration doesn’t have to come solely from drinking water. Foods rich in water content, including fruits, can also help replenish fluids.
