Chinese mainland motorcycle manufacturers are supporting the smuggling of their motorcycles into Taiwan. In response to this issue, Taiwan’s Ministry of Finance Customs Administration stated today (21st) that customs will strictly investigate and handle the matter according to the law, without leniency.
Recently, a Chinese heavyweight motorcycle brand, Zhang Xue Motorcycles, attempted to enter Taiwan illegally, but was confiscated by customs. Zhang Xue, the chairman of Zhang Xue Motorcycles, stated that he intends to pay legal fees for the owner to reclaim the motorcycles and will continue to send more motorcycles until they are unified.
The Taiwan Ministry of Finance Customs Administration released a press release today stating that Chinese mainland motorcycle manufacturers have recently claimed online “one seized, one sent” and are willing to support illegal import activities. The Customs Administration emphasized that it is in charge of border control and smuggling enforcement, and will not compromise in accordance with the law. Any attempt to circumvent import controls will be strictly investigated and dealt with according to the law.
According to current regulations, the import of whole heavy motorcycles and motorcycle engines from China are listed as MW0 (items not allowed to be imported from China), meaning that Taiwan currently does not allow imports from mainland China.
The Customs Administration stated that recently, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs Bureau of Foreign Trade and the Ministry of the Interior Police Administration, joint enforcement operations were carried out in New Taipei City, resulting in the seizure of one unauthorized Chinese-made heavy motorcycle. Investigations into related evidence are currently ongoing, and if any illegal attempts to circumvent controls are discovered, they will be dealt with according to relevant regulations.
The Customs Administration mentioned that customs works in cooperation with trade and police authorities to provide relevant customs clearance information for domestic management. Customs continues to implement national trade management policies at the border, strictly preventing Chinese-made motorcycles and engines from illegally entering the Taiwan market through means such as false reporting, smuggling, or disassembly. They also urge both manufacturers and the public not to take chances and to verify relevant import controls and inspection regulations beforehand, avoiding breaking the law due to misleading advertising.
