15 Cuban Illegal Immigrants Drift for Several Days, Rescued by Mexican Navy

August 21, 2026, Epoch Times News: The Mexican Navy confirmed on Thursday, August 20, that they successfully located a Cuban migrant boat that had gone missing at sea last week and rescued 15 people onboard, including 4 minors. These illegal immigrants had been adrift at sea for several days with dwindling supplies and fuel, but fortunately, they were all safely rescued in the end.

According to various media reports, the group of migrants set sail last Tuesday, August 11, on a makeshift boat from Pinar del Rio province in western Cuba but lost contact while en route to their destination.

As time passed, concerns grew over their safety as supplies on the boat were running low.

A Mexican Navy source confirmed to Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Thursday, “We located and rescued these Cubans in the Gulf of Mexico.” The source revealed that a total of 15 people, including 4 minors, were rescued, and they have since been taken to relevant facilities for further assistance and care.

An interview with a Cuban man residing in Mexico on Univision earlier revealed that his wife and two children were on the boat, which was facing a shortage of fuel.

For decades, facing severe economic crisis, shortages of essentials, and political pressures, many Cubans have risked their lives to escape the communist regime. They often take perilous journeys on makeshift boats or rafts to cross the treacherous Florida Straits to reach the United States or travel to Mexico via the Caribbean Sea. However, these journeys often end tragically, with many individuals going missing or meeting unfortunate fates.

Currently, there are approximately 1.5 million Cuban exiles worldwide, with a majority settling in the United States, particularly in Miami, forming a large and influential overseas community.

Since the United States intensified sanctions against Cuba, living conditions on the island have sharply deteriorated. Many areas in Cuba now only have a few hours of electricity supply per day, and essential goods such as food, drinking water, and medicines are facing severe shortages.
