Veteran actress Maggie Cheung reveals plan to retire, does not rule out becoming an internet celebrity in the future.

Hong Kong artist Angie Chiu, 78, recently revealed in an interview on the New City Information program “Conversations about the Rest of Life” that she has begun planning for retirement. She mentioned that after retirement, she may consider transitioning to become a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) and share her decades of experience and insights in the entertainment industry.

In June, Angie Chiu appeared as a guest at her close friend Anita Mui’s concert, where she was interviewed alongside her husband, Melvin Wong. During the interview, Melvin Wong mentioned casually that Angie Chiu has been contemplating retirement, even suggesting that it could happen within the next four to five years. In the recent interview on “Conversations about the Rest of Life,” Chiu clarified that her decision to retire is not due to fatigue from performing but rather a decline in her physical condition, particularly noting memory issues and a general sense of exhaustion.

Known for her high work standards, Angie Chiu expressed her reluctance to compromise the quality of her work due to her own limitations. She emphasized the importance of being responsible towards her health and audience, stating that pushing herself beyond her capabilities would be irresponsible.

Despite discussing retirement, Angie Chiu maintains a positive outlook and does not plan to immediately stop working. She mentioned that she will selectively take on work in the near future, focusing on opportunities that align with her abilities and interests. Upon true retirement, she intends to transition into being a KOL, leveraging her wealth of experience in the industry to share insights and personal reflections as an artist.

Angie Chiu is considered a timeless figure in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. She entered the industry in the 1960s, initially training at the Shaw Brothers studio before becoming a contract actress. In the 1970s, she joined TVB and became one of the first leading actresses. Beyond television, Angie Chiu also pursued a career as a singer, delivering theme songs and soundtrack contributions for many films and dramas, alongside holding large-scale concerts. Additionally, she and her husband, Melvin Wong, have actively promoted Cantonese opera, receiving continuous work invitations to this day.

Despite her successful career, Angie Chiu has faced various health challenges in recent years. She battled cancer twice, first diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1985 due to hoarseness in her voice, which was successfully treated through surgery. In 2002, she overcame breast cancer with early detection and timely treatment, swiftly returning to the stage post-recovery.

Angie Chiu and Melvin Wong tied the knot in Las Vegas in 2009 after a 20-year courtship, maintaining a loving relationship over the years and frequently sharing sweet photos together. Transitioning into a semi-retired lifestyle in recent years, the couple enjoys traveling and exploring the world together. Embracing her age and the idea of stepping off the stage gracefully, Angie Chiu has garnered understanding and admiration from many netizens for her unwavering passion for performance.
