Lublin Triangle Talks: Lithuania Backs Ukraine Joining EU

On January 25th, Ukrainian President Zelensky visited Lithuania and participated in the trilateral talks of the “Lublin Triangle” between Ukraine, Lithuania, and Poland, held in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda expressed Lithuania’s support for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union by 2030.

The meeting between Zelensky and Nauseda focused on support for Ukraine in the energy sector and air defense, as well as discussions on military cooperation and joint defense projects. Lithuania plans to provide nearly 100 generators to cities and communities in Ukraine, as the country’s energy infrastructure has been under continuous airstrikes from Russia, leaving thousands of Ukrainians without heating, electricity, and water.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki later joined the discussion, forming the trilateral talks of the “Lublin Triangle.” Established in 2020, the Lublin Triangle is a trilateral cooperation framework among Ukraine, Poland, and Lithuania aimed at strengthening regional partnerships in security, economy, and humanitarian issues.

Zelensky stated on social media that the discussions with the Lithuanian and Polish presidents involved important dialogues on the development of drone interception technology, Ukraine’s EU accession, and recent trilateral peace talks between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia.

Lithuania and Poland have been steadfast supporters of Ukraine in countering Russian aggression. Nauseda emphasized Lithuania’s active support for Ukraine’s European integration, with the goal of Ukraine joining the EU by 2030 to ensure stability and prosperity in the region.

Zelensky stressed that security guarantees are a top priority in Ukraine’s peace negotiations, noting that bilateral security agreements with the United States are ready pending signatures. He mentioned that the documents are 100% prepared, awaiting confirmation of the signing date and location, followed by ratification in the US Congress and Ukrainian Parliament.

Regarding EU membership, Zelensky mentioned that Ukraine is technically preparing to open all clusters for negotiations with the EU as of the first half of 2026, aiming for full technical readiness by 2027.

President Nawrocki of Poland expressed support for Ukraine but refrained from making personal predictions on the timing of Ukraine’s EU accession, citing the complex and time-consuming nature of the process that requires careful balancing.

On January 23rd and 24th, Ukraine, the United States, and Russia held their first trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi to discuss the ceasefire issue in Ukraine, without reaching an agreement. However, both Ukraine and Russia expressed willingness to engage in further dialogue, with negotiations set to restart in the UAE on February 1st.

On January 26th, the Kremlin stated that Russia would not make concessions on the Donbass issue, emphasizing full control over Donbass as a prerequisite for reaching a peace agreement.
