Armed Robbers Posing as Natural Gas Company Employees Attempt to Rob Houses

In the dim light of public safety concerns, various types of home invasion robberies have been occurring frequently. Last Friday, three robbers in Los Angeles County posed as natural gas company employees, armed with guns, attempting to break into a residence to commit robbery. Fortunately, their scheme was thwarted and no injuries were reported. However, the incident has left the community residents feeling unsettled.

According to a report by ABC7 News, this frightening incident took place around 7 p.m. on the 24th of May at a residence located at 8100 Bradwell Ave in Whittier, Los Angeles County. When the three men knocked on the door claiming to be gas company workers needing to check the electricity meter, the homeowner became suspicious and refused to open the door, ensuring it was securely locked, forcing the men to leave.

Shortly after, the homeowner stepped outside to assess the situation, only to have the three suspects suddenly turn back, brandishing handguns hidden at their side, attempting to forcibly enter the residence. The homeowner and their family swiftly took refuge inside, locking the door before quickly alerting the authorities. The suspects fled the scene thereafter.

Despite no reports of gunshots or injuries, this terrifying event has shaken the peace of the quiet neighborhood, leaving residents feeling fearful. The three suspects, appearing to be Hispanic males in their twenties, remain at large. The victims have shared footage on social media showing the suspects attempting to forcibly enter the residence with a gun, urging residents to stay vigilant.

Law enforcement advises the public to remain cautious when encountering strangers knocking on their door. If there are any suspicions, individuals are urged to report to the authorities immediately.

SoCalGas has long been warning the public to verify the identities of those claiming to be affiliated with the company. On their official website, they state: “We encourage you to be vigilant and question anyone claiming to be with SoCalGas.”

There are several ways to verify identities: according to company regulations, all employees conducting business for the company must carry official company identification; most employees are required to always wear work uniforms with the company logo, carry employee identification, and operate company vehicles; a few employees may not need to wear company uniforms, therefore residents are advised to always ask for identification.

The company’s website explicitly states that individuals can verify anyone claiming to be a SoCalGas employee by calling them at “1-800-427-2200.” In most cases, they only provide services based on scheduled appointments. If there is no prior arrangement, individuals are advised to contact them before allowing anyone into their home.

Furthermore, individuals are cautioned not to disclose any personal information to strangers claiming to be employees of power, water, or gas companies over the phone, and not to make payments using gift cards, wire transfers, or any other method for alleged debts claimed by such individuals.
