Unveiling the Health Code at Orange County Lecture in Taiwan’s Traditional Week

In Orange County, California, the Taiwan Traditional Week “Medical Lecture” event was held on May 11 at the Orange County Chinese Community Center auditorium. Two main doctors, Dr. Xu Zhengxiong and Dr. Zhang Yaowen, provided valuable advice on dental care and anti-aging for over 80 overseas Taiwanese attending the event. The event was jointly hosted by the Traditional Week Organizing Committee members Lu Yaoxun, Lin Cuiyun, Xu Zhansheng, Huang Hefen, and Overseas Chinese Affairs Consultant Zhang Xinzhu.

Director Xiao Beiru of the Orange County Chinese Community Center delivered a speech, praising Taiwan’s medical technology development that has garnered global attention, particularly its achievements in epidemic prevention. She thanked the organizing committee for hosting the medical lecture and hoped to raise the health awareness of middle-aged and elderly overseas Taiwanese to embrace aging gracefully. She also encouraged attendees to apply for the iOverseas Taiwanese card, which provides information on designated hospitals and related appointment details for health check-ups in Taiwan.

During the lecture, Overseas Chinese Affairs Consultant and dentist Dr. Hsu Zhengxiong emphasized the importance of daily oral hygiene and provided practical maintenance advice. He shared his many years of experience in serving the overseas Taiwanese community, including participation in activities such as the North America Taiwanese Medical Association (NATMA) support for Taiwan to join the World Health Organization (WHA) in Geneva and volunteering services. He encouraged middle-aged listeners to engage in community activities outside of work.

Internist Dr. Zhang Yaowen then shared common health issues and preventive measures for the elderly. He advised everyone to avoid inflammation and maintain physical function, prevent osteoporosis by focusing on diet and engaging in weight-bearing exercises regularly, prevent sarcopenia by doing weightlifting muscle training, prevent falls caused by imbalance by not exceeding 80% of maximum heart rate during exercise, and prevent stroke due to irregular heart rhythm during sleep by wearing an Apple Watch and regularly monitoring health conditions.

After the lecture, attendees expressed that they greatly benefited from the information and eagerly asked health-related questions. The Orange County Chinese Lions Club also prepared pink roses to gift to the women present, wishing everyone a happy Mother’s Day.
